The Muro SUB2020 is the larger model of ELAC's two-piece Muro range of thin powered subwoofers. It moves from the 8-inch driver of the SUB2010 to a 10-inch unit while keeping the flat cabinet shape, and ELAC America prices it at USD 999 per piece in either black or white.
Key specs that matter
The woofer uses a 10-inch polypropylene cone, powered by a BASH amplifier with ratings of 250 W RMS and 500 W peak. Response is specified from 35 to 150 Hz. Its crossover can be moved freely from 50 up to 150 Hz. The box is 166 x 399 x 462 mm and weighs 12.7 kg. There are left, right and LFE inputs, and an integrated AirX2 receiver accepts a wireless feed once the matching ELAC transmitter is added. Standby consumption is 0.5 W. The black version is finished in vinyl, the white one in matte paint, and the grille is metal, offered in black or grey.
Engineering and use context
With its thin profile, the SUB2020 was drawn up for places a cube subwoofer cannot go - flat against a wall, inside a shallow gap next to furniture or under a sofa. The cabinet can be operated vertically or horizontally, and ELAC ships horizontal feet together with wall mount brackets, so owners choose between floor, under-furniture and wall installation with parts from the box. There are no volume or crossover dials on the rear panel, a choice ELAC made to keep the thin back clear. Instead, a smartphone running the ELAC SUB Control 2.0 app connects over Bluetooth Low Energy and sets level, crossover, phase, delay and the sound presets, and several subwoofers can be run from one handset. A Bluetooth 4.0 LE device on iOS or Android is required for setup. The BASH amplifier is a tracking type, which lets a thin chassis carry a large amplifier rating. Because the wireless receiver is inside, the sub needs only a power socket nearby when the AirX2 transmitter is used, and the signal cable from the receiver or amplifier can be dropped.
Pairing
Its extension makes the SUB2020 a match for compact bookshelf or on-wall speakers in a living room system of around 20 m2, where a tall floorstanding sub would not fit the furniture. It accepts one LFE cable from a surround receiver, or a left and right pair from the variable pre-outs of a two-channel amplifier. In a multi-room or wall-mounted TV layout the wireless option removes the longest cable run, and since the app handles more than one ELAC sub, a second SUB2020 or a SUB2010 can be added later and set from the same phone.
Alternatives
The ELAC Muro SUB2010 is the narrower sister model at 122 mm, with an 8-inch doped paper cone and 125 W RMS.
