The SW-1000 is a 10-inch active subwoofer from the Storm series of Guangzhou Tonewinner Electronics, a Chinese maker of home theatre equipment. It combines a long-stroke driver with a front-firing dual reflex port and an analog Class H amplifier, and the company positions it for dedicated home cinema rooms.

Key specs that matter

Tonewinner rates the built-in amplifier at 200 W, with a peak figure of 1000 W into 4 ohm, while the rated impedance of the driver is 3 ohm. Tonewinner gives a frequency range of 21 Hz to 240 Hz. The cabinet measures 360 mm wide, 432 mm deep and 432 mm high, and the subwoofer weighs 19 kg net. Mains input can be set for 110-115 V or 220-230 V. In its packaging the unit measures 472 x 517 x 540 mm and weighs 21 kg, and one driver is fitted.

Engineering and use context

The single 10-inch driver has a high-damping paper cone, a 35 mm voice coil and a high-density foam roll surround, and it sits in a one-piece high-strength basket meant to resist resonance and deformation. Its magnet system is designed for long excursion. Power comes from a large audiophile-grade toroidal transformer feeding a Class H analog amplifier that is cooled by a finned heat sink. The enclosure is built from 25 mm thick MDF to limit panel vibration and internal standing waves. A pair of front-mounted reflex ports sits on the baffle, which the maker says eases placement near walls. On the rear panel there are controls for the low-pass crossover frequency, a 0 or 180 degree phase switch and gain. Signal can arrive as left and right full-range RCA, as an unbalanced RCA LFE feed or through a fully balanced LFE input, and protection circuits guard the amplifier. The maker notes that the low-pass filter is intended to remove signal above the cutoff so that only low frequencies reach the driver, and it credits more than 30 years of company design experience behind the amplifier topology. The cone is described as light and rigid so that it stays stable under high power.

Pairing

A processor or receiver fitted with an XLR sub output can use the balanced LFE input, while the stereo full-range inputs let the SW-1000 extend a two-channel system built around an integrated amplifier with no dedicated sub output. Tonewinner receivers such as the AT-2180 and AT-2700 provide three subwoofer outputs, so two or three of these units can be run together in one room.

Alternatives

The Tonewinner SW-D2000 is a 12-inch model with a 400 W Class D amplifier, DSP control with a 7-band EQ and app adjustment.
