The ToneWinner SW-D4000 is the 12-inch member of the SW-D series of DSP powered subwoofers from Guangzhou Tonewinner Electronics in China. It combines a single long-throw driver, a Class D amplifier, a digital signal processor and Wi-Fi control through the Tonewinner subwoofer app, and it is intended for home cinema systems and stereo setups that need a dedicated low-frequency channel. Within the SW-D range it is the entry point by driver size - the SW-D6000 keeps the same amplifier rating with a 15-inch unit, the SW-D8000 and SW-D8000PRO move to two 15-inch drivers and 1500 W, and the SW-D9000 uses an 18-inch driver at 1500 W.

Key specs that matter

ToneWinner rates the internal amplifier at 800 W RMS into 3 ohms, and the maker lists a peak figure of 4000 W at the same load. The quoted frequency range runs from 16 Hz to 240 Hz. The enclosure is 440 mm wide, 533 mm high and 558 mm deep, and the unit weighs 34 kg net, or 42 kg packed. The rear panel carries a balanced XLR jack and an RCA jack, plus a single subwoofer output for passing the signal on. The power supply accepts both 110-115 V and 220-230 V mains.

Engineering and use context

The 12-inch driver uses a high-strength cone on a cast aluminium frame, a rubber surround and a 65 mm voice coil wound with OFC wire. Its motor has a dual magnet structure. The cabinet is MDF with two ports on the front of the cabinet, and a seal mode lets the owner close those ports and run the box as a closed design. The DSP provides a 7-band parametric EQ, an adjustable low-pass filter, a 0 or 180 degree phase switch and four presets called deep, normal, strong and user. Settings can be changed on an LCD panel with four touch buttons, mounted upside down so it can be read by looking down from above the cabinet, or from a phone, and firmware updates arrive wirelessly through the app. The app itself adjusts gain, phase and the listening mode. The sub drops to standby when no signal is present. Protection circuits cover over-voltage, overload, over-heat and over-current conditions.

Pairing

With its two input types, the SW-D4000 links to a surround amplifier through either a balanced or an unbalanced cable. ToneWinner itself shows the SW-D series next to its own Dolby Atmos AV receivers. The output jack lets the owner daisy-chain a second subwoofer, and the dual-voltage supply means the same unit can be used in different regions without a converter.

Alternatives

For a larger driver in the same series, ToneWinner offers the SW-D6000, a 15-inch DSP powered subwoofer.
