With a 16 inch driver, the RP-1600SW tops the four Reference Premiere subwoofers in size, a group that Klipsch of Indianapolis lists alongside the RP-1000SW, RP-1200SW and RP-1400SW. The current version of the line dates from 2023. Like its smaller siblings, it is covered by a 5-year warranty.
Key specs that matter
The rated band reaches from 14.5 Hz to 175 Hz at plus or minus 3 dB, the lowest limit of the four RP models, and Klipsch quotes 125.5 dB as the maximum acoustic output. Power comes from an amplifier with an analog preamp stage feeding a Class D output section, rated at 800 W RMS with 1,600 W available as peak. The woofer is an Ultra Long Throw type with a copper-coloured Cerametallic cone. The MDF cabinet measures 59.4 cm in height, 59.7 cm in width and 69.5 cm in depth, and the sub weighs 50.3 kg. It comes only in ebony vinyl. Signal enters through a pair of RCA line or LFE jacks, and a WA-2 port takes the optional wireless receiver.
Engineering and use context
Such a large long-throw cone moves a large volume of air per stroke, and Klipsch pairs it with a big reflex box to reach so low. The company explains its Cerametallic cone as a light, rigid material that resists breakup, keeping distortion down and requiring less amplifier power per decibel. Reflex loading uses a slot port in the front panel, called Aerofoil, with internal flares that reduce air turbulence and the noise it causes. Front firing woofer and port give freedom in where the cabinet goes. Controls on the back cover low-pass crossover frequency and variable phase for integration with the main speakers. Wired and wireless inputs can both stay connected and active, so the same sub can be shared by a home cinema receiver on the wireless link and a two-channel amplifier on RCA cable. Standby power is 0.5 W. The wrap covers the entire cabinet in scratch resistant vinyl, and the grille is woven cloth on steel posts, with rubber feet underneath.
Pairing
A receiver with an LFE output or a stereo preamplifier with a subwoofer output feeds the RCA inputs. Klipsch allows up to four subwoofers fitted with WA-2 kits to run wirelessly in a single room, and the spun copper cone echoes the woofers of Reference Premiere speakers.
Alternatives
The Klipsch RP-1400SW is the step down in size, built around a 14 inch woofer and 500 W RMS of amplification that reaches 16 Hz.
