The R-10SWi is a 10 inch powered subwoofer in the Reference series from Klipsch of Indianapolis, and its defining feature is a built-in wireless receiver with a matching transmitter in the box. Its larger sibling is the R-12SWi, the 12 inch wireless version. The R-10SWi is a wireless sub that can also run on a normal cable, which covers systems where the wireless link is not wanted.

Key specs that matter

A single front-firing woofer with a spun copper IMG cone is driven by an all-digital amplifier rated at 150 W continuous and 300 W peak. Frequency response is quoted as 32 Hz to 120 Hz within 3 dB. The ported MDF enclosure is covered in a brushed black polymer veneer, with a removable grille. It measures 370 mm high, 318 mm wide and 462 mm deep, and the weight is about 11.6 kg. The wireless link works on the 2.4 GHz band, and the mains input accepts 100 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz, a range that covers mains supplies in most countries.

Engineering and use context

In the box are the subwoofer, a power cable, the wireless transmitter and a separate power supply for the transmitter. The transmitter plugs into the LFE or subwoofer output of a receiver, and the sub receives the signal over the air, so only a mains socket is needed where the cabinet stands. Receiver and transmitter arrive pre-paired; if the link has to be rebuilt, a Sync button is held for three seconds and a blue light changes from flashing to solid once pairing is complete. For wired use, the rear panel has an LFE line input and a stereo left and right line input. The back plate also carries a gain knob, a low-pass filter with an LFE setting for when the receiver handles the crossover, a phase control and a three-way power switch with On, Auto and Off. In Auto the amplifier wakes when it detects a signal and drops to standby after about 20 minutes of silence, and a green LED on the front baffle shows when the amplifier is active.

Pairing

A surround receiver is the natural host, since its sub output drives the transmitter and its bass management can set the crossover. A stereo amplifier or preamplifier with left and right pre-outs can feed the stereo line input by cable instead. Klipsch suggests a crossover of 50 Hz to 90 Hz for larger floorstanding speakers and higher points for small bookshelf or satellite models.

Alternatives

The Klipsch R-120SW is a wired Reference subwoofer with a 12 inch woofer, 200 W of continuous power and response down to 29 Hz.
