The Flexus SUB 100 is a compact wireless subwoofer from Klipsch of Indianapolis, built for the Flexus sound system, the soundbar family that Klipsch developed with its sister company Onkyo. Klipsch Group, a wholly owned subsidiary of Voxx International, states that engineers at Onkyo checked the Flexus range and each product passed more than 1,000 tests for audio performance and interconnection. The SUB 100 is the smaller of the Flexus subwoofers, supplied in a single ebony vinyl finish, and it is sold on its own or in a bundle with the Core 200 soundbar as the Flexus System 210.
Key specs that matter
A sealed MDF enclosure houses a 10 inch long-throw paper cone woofer. A Class D amplifier supplies 80 W RMS, with a peak figure of 160 W. Klipsch rates frequency response at 26 Hz to 250 Hz within 3 dB and maximum acoustic output at 103.7 dB. The cabinet is 340 mm high, 335 mm wide and 349 mm deep and weighs 9.4 kg. Inputs are one RCA LFE line input and the Flexus Transport wireless link on the 2.4 GHz band. Supplied accessories are a 2.0 m right-angle IEC power cord, a Flexus Transport wireless dongle and the manual. Retail SKUs differ by region, with 1072077 for North America, 1072078 for Europe and 1072079 for the CCC region, and the packaging is designed to minimise waste and be recyclable.
Engineering and use context
A long-throw cone can move further than a standard woofer of the same diameter, which is how such a compact box reaches so deep. The sealed cabinet has no port, so there is no port noise and the box can be small. Flexus Transport is the proprietary wireless protocol used by all Flexus products, designed for low latency, and the supplied dongle plugs into the soundbar to create the link. Once connected, the sub is managed through the Klipsch Connect Plus app for iOS and Android, with EQ presets, a night mode, dialogue boost and volume control among its functions. Klipsch also allows two identical SUB 100 units to be paired in one system, which it says reduces the peaks and nulls that a single subwoofer produces at different seats.
Pairing
Klipsch and Onkyo list the Flexus Core 100 and Core 200 soundbars as partners, the SUB 100 is also offered as an add-on for the Core 300, and the SURR 100 wireless surround speakers complete a Flexus system. The RCA LFE input also accepts a wired feed.
Alternatives
The Klipsch Flexus SUB 200 is the 12 inch wireless subwoofer of the same Flexus family.
