The R-120SW is the 12-inch member of the 2018 Klipsch Reference subwoofer pair, released alongside the 10-inch R-100SW and covered by the same owner's manual. Klipsch has since replaced it with the R-121SW. Like the rest of that generation, it wears a scratch-resistant black vinyl wrap with a textured wood grain look, with a slim low-profile grille in front of the driver and MDF used for the enclosure.

Key specs that matter

Bass comes from one front-firing 12-inch high-excursion woofer with a spun-copper cone of Injection Molded Graphite (IMG). The built-in all-digital amplifier delivers 200 W continuous, with 400 W quoted as peak. Response is specified as 29 Hz to 120 Hz at plus or minus 3 dB, and Klipsch lists 116 dB as the maximum acoustic output. The cabinet is reflex loaded and its port exits at the rear. It measures 419 mm in height, 356 mm in width and 488 mm in depth, with a weight of 14.1 kg.

Engineering and use context

Klipsch credits the IMG material with low mass and high stiffness, so the cone resists breakup and adds little distortion at the bottom of the range. Compared with the 10-inch R-100SW, rated at 150 W continuous, 32 Hz and 112 dB, the R-120SW gains a larger cone and improves on each of those figures. The amplifier panel offers a volume knob, a low-pass control that runs up to 160 Hz and a phase switch with 0 and 180 degree settings. A separate switch chooses Off, Auto or On. In Auto the sub powers up when it detects an incoming signal and returns to standby once 15 to 20 minutes have passed with nothing playing. A front LED shows green whenever the amplifier is running with signal. Klipsch notes that the forward-facing driver gives freedom in where the cabinet can stand.

Pairing

Inputs are line-level RCA only - one marked L/LFE and one marked R. With a multichannel receiver, the LFE output feeds the L/LFE jack and the receiver sets the crossover, so the sub's own low-pass knob goes fully clockwise. For a two-channel preamplifier, both pre-outs can be wired to the two jacks, and Klipsch's guidance is a crossover around 50 Hz to 90 Hz for tower speakers and 90 Hz to 150 Hz for compact bookshelf or satellite speakers. The Line/LFE inputs are meant to cover the majority of home theater receivers.

Alternatives

The Klipsch R-100SW is the 10-inch IMG subwoofer from the same 2018 Reference generation, with a smaller amplifier and less bass extension.
