Klipsch, based in Indianapolis, offers the RP-1400SW as the 14 inch member of its Reference Premiere subwoofer family, which runs from the 10 inch RP-1000SW through the 12 inch RP-1200SW to the 16 inch RP-1600SW. It is the second model from the top and belongs to the 2023 generation. All four follow one design recipe scaled to different cabinet volumes, and each is backed by a 5-year warranty.
Key specs that matter
Klipsch rates the low end at 16 Hz and the upper limit at 141 Hz, both within 3 dB, with maximum acoustic output of 124 dB. The amplifier delivers 500 W RMS and 1,000 W peak and combines a Class D output stage with an analog preamp section. A single Ultra Long Throw woofer with a spun copper Cerametallic cone fires forward. The MDF enclosure stands 54.2 cm tall, 50.8 cm wide and 65.2 cm deep, and the complete unit weighs 38 kg. Ebony vinyl is the one finish. Connections are dual RCA line-level and LFE inputs and a socket for the WA-2 wireless module.
Engineering and use context
According to Klipsch, the Cerametallic cone combines low mass with high stiffness, so it breaks up less, adds less distortion and needs less amplifier power for the same output. Klipsch's design goal for the range is a balance between amplifier power, driver ability and box volume. The bass reflex cabinet vents through a front-mounted Aerofoil slot whose internal flared shape is meant to cut port noise, and with the port on the front the sub can sit close to a wall or inside furniture. Low-pass frequency and phase are adjustable on the amplifier plate. The analog preamp stage keeps the incoming signal in the analog domain before the Class D stage. RCA and wireless inputs work at once, which lets a single RP-1400SW take a wireless feed from a surround receiver and a cabled feed from a stereo amplifier with no input switch. In standby it consumes 0.5 W. Construction details include rounded cabinet edges, steel grille posts, a cloth grille and rubber feet that damp vibration.
Pairing
The RCA jacks connect to an AV receiver LFE output, or to the subwoofer output found on many stereo preamplifiers and integrated amplifiers. The optional WA-2 kit removes the signal cable, and Klipsch supports up to four wireless subwoofers in one room. The cone finish is shared with the woofers of the Reference Premiere main speakers.
Alternatives
The Klipsch RP-1600SW sits one step above in the series, with 800 W RMS and a rated low limit of 14.5 Hz.
