Within the TD Series of the Danish maker Raidho Acoustics, the TD3.2 is a tower whose drive units are developed and made by the company itself. TD stands for Tantalum Diamond, the coating used on the cones of the range. Raidho describes the TD3.2 as a true three-way design built on its newer drivers, including the 5 inch midrange also used in the TD3.8, together with the updated TD ribbon tweeter.
Key specs that matter
The TD3.2 carries one TD ribbon tweeter, one Tantalum Diamond midrange and three 6.5 inch Tantalum Diamond bass units. The crossover points are 400 Hz and 2.4 kHz with stepped slopes. Raidho quotes a range of 28 Hz to 50 kHz within 3 dB, a sensitivity of 90 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, a nominal impedance of 4 ohm and a power requirement of 50 to 300 W. The speaker measures 315 mm wide, 1,235 mm high and 505 mm deep including its feet, against a cabinet footprint of 200 x 505 mm, and it weighs 55 kg. Piano black lacquer, walnut burl and made-to-order colours are available.
Engineering and use context
A separate internal chamber houses the midrange inside the cabinet, which Raidho links to more detail in the critical midrange band. Bass loading is by a reflex port in the rear, which the maker calls impulse optimized. Decoupling is built into the feet - the cabinet rests on ceramic balls, so spikes are not needed. The TD membrane is a five-layer sandwich developed with the Danish Technical Institute, in which tantalum and then artificial diamond, about 1.5 carat per membrane and only 10 microns thick, are applied over an aluminium and ceramic base. Raidho states that this reduces resonances by 36 dB compared with ceramic and lifts the breakup mode to 20 kHz. The TD motor uses an N52 neodymium magnet around an underhung titanium coil of square-section wire, and copper plating over the pole piece reduces inductance. For the TD version of the ribbon tweeter, redesigned magnets, waveguide and rear panel raised sensitivity by 3 dB and cut distortion by 35 dB. The crossovers use Mundorf parts and are hand-wired point to point, and all internal wiring is Nordost monofilament cable, with an optional upgrade to Odin TSC wire.
Pairing
Given the low nominal impedance and the wide power window, solid-state designs comfortable with low impedances suit the TD3.2 best.
Alternatives
The Raidho TD4.2 is the TD Series floorstander that introduced a true MTM layout to the line, with two midranges placed symmetrically around the ribbon tweeter.
