The TD2.2 is a 2.5-way floor-standing speaker in the Tantalum Diamond range of Raidho Acoustics, a brand of the Danish company Dantax Radio A/S. Raidho presents it as the step beyond the TD1.2 standmount, keeping the same ribbon tweeter and cone type but adding a second cone for the bass. It now appears in the maker's list of earlier models. At launch the pair cost EUR 39,500 in black and EUR 43,500 in walnut or a custom colour.

Key specs that matter

Three drivers are fitted - a TD ribbon tweeter, a 6.5 inch Tantalum Diamond mid/bass and a second 6.5 inch Tantalum Diamond cone for bass only. The crossover points are 400 Hz and 2.4 kHz, both with a stepped slope. Raidho quotes 32 Hz to 50 kHz within 3 dB, 88 dB sensitivity at 2.83 V and 1 m, and a 6 ohm nominal impedance, with an independent measurement showing a minimum of 4.7 ohm. The suggested amplifier range is 50 to 150 W. Including its feet the speaker is 315 mm wide, 1,150 mm tall and 505 mm deep, and it weighs 45 kg. Buyers can order it in piano black, in walnut burl or in a colour of their choice.

Engineering and use context

In the 2.5-way layout both cones run together in the low bass, but the lower one is rolled off at the first crossover point, so the upper cone alone covers the midrange until the handover to the ribbon. The cones and their motors are designed and made in-house, with N52 neodymium magnets and underhung titanium voice coils chosen for linearity and low distortion. The planar magnetic tweeter is built by hand in Denmark around a foil 11 microns thin and 20 milligrams light, with a breakup point of 82 kHz. The cabinet follows the shape of a boat hull to limit internal cavity resonances. Its front is made of three metal modules, one for each driver, which flex less than MDF. The base is solid MDF and is separated from the cabinet by a thick felt layer and a small gap, and ceramic balls built into it do the job of spikes. Crossover parts come from Mundorf and the internal wiring from Nordost. The reflex port on the rear is shaped for impulse response.

Pairing

Since the load never falls far below 5 ohm, the TD2.2 suits an amplifier that stays stable into 4 ohm within the suggested power window, while holding its top level for long stretches calls for more than the upper suggested figure into 4 ohm. Measured maximum level reaches 100 dB continuous and 112 dB for short peaks. The rear port asks for free space behind each cabinet.
