The TD3.8 is a three-way floorstander in the TD Series from Raidho Acoustics, the Danish company that designs and builds its drivers in-house in Pandrup, northern Denmark. Launched at the Munich show in 2024, it is described by Raidho as its first midsized floorstander with large drivers. In the TD Series it sits below the TD6, TD4.8 and TD4.2.

Key specs that matter

Drivers are one Raidho TD ribbon tweeter, two 5 in (125 mm) midranges and two 8 in (200 mm) woofers, with crossover points at 400 Hz and 2.4 kHz. The cabinet is a bass reflex design with a rear port. Response runs from 24 Hz to 50 kHz, sensitivity is 89 dB with a 6 ohm nominal and 4 ohm minimum impedance, and the recommended amplifier range is 50 W to 300 W. Each cabinet measures 440 x 1420 x 620 mm wide, tall and deep respectively, and each speaker weighs 83 kg.

Engineering and use context

The midrange and bass cones use Raidho's TD construction, a five-layer sandwich of aluminium, ceramic and tantalum finished with a thin deposit of artificial diamond applied in a vacuum process with argon gas. The five layers raise internal damping and stiffness together. Each driver has an edge-wound proprietary voice coil and a neodymium motor system rated at more than 1.1 tesla, and the turbine-shaped magnet and basket assembly is designed to limit reflections behind the cone. The ribbon tweeter is a planar magnetic unit with a membrane of about 11 micrometres, weighing around 20 mg. For the TD Series it gained a stronger magnet and a redesigned rear chamber, which Raidho states lowers distortion by 35 dB and raises sensitivity by 2 dB over the earlier version. The two midranges flank the tweeter in an MTM arrangement, which Raidho uses to lower distortion and crossover points and to control dispersion. The crossover filters use stepped slopes and sit in the base of the cabinet with all acoustic treatment inside, and the enclosure itself is 250 mm wide without the feet. The enclosure was redesigned for internal airflow, with a bullet-shaped top and a narrow rear, and the crossover adds more out-of-band filtering while raising the power handling of each driver. Finishes are piano black, burl walnut veneer or any colour to order.

Pairing

The moderate impedance and sensitivity make the TD3.8 manageable for good solid-state amplifiers of 100 W or more, and many valve designs of similar power. Its deep bass extension suits rooms of 30 m2 and larger, and its size and weight need to be planned into placement.
