The Silver 200 7G is the smaller floorstanding speaker of Monitor Audio's seventh-generation Silver series, announced on 10 August 2021 and available from September 2021 at USD 2,200 per pair. The Silver range sits between Bronze and Gold, and the 7G models are now listed on the company's Heritage pages. The Silver 200 7G is a slim 2.5-way tower with two 5.25-inch mid-bass drivers.
Key specs that matter
Two 5.25-inch C-CAM RST II mid-bass drivers work with a 25 mm C-CAM gold dome tweeter fitted with UD Waveguide II, and the tweeter takes over at 2.7 kHz. The in-room -6 dB response is 34 Hz to 35 kHz. Sensitivity is 87.5 dB, impedance is 8 ohms nominal with a 5.0 ohm minimum at 250 Hz, and maximum output is 108 dB. It handles 150 W, and 60 to 150 W amplifiers are recommended. The cabinet measures about 859 x 165 x 264 mm, or 920 x 253 x 332 mm with its outrigger feet, and weighs 13.7 kg. Finishes are Black Oak, Natural Walnut, Ash, Satin White and High Gloss Black.
Engineering and use context
RST II refers to the second generation of Monitor Audio's Rigid Surface Technology, in which the C-CAM cone is pressed with a hexagonal dimple pattern to stiffen it. Both cones and the dome are C-CAM, an alloy of aluminium and magnesium with a ceramic coating. The tweeter sits behind the second version of the UD waveguide, which shapes its dispersion. As a 2.5-way design, both 5.25-inch drivers produce bass, but only the upper driver reaches into the midrange. A rear port extends the bass, and spikes or rubber pads screw into the outrigger feet. The front baffle is only 165 mm wide, which keeps the tower narrow in a living room. Compared with the Bronze 500, the Silver 200 7G is 92 mm shorter, 66 mm narrower and 4.3 kg lighter, and it uses smaller 5.25-inch drivers with the RST II cone surface. Its sensitivity is 2.5 dB below that of the Bronze 500, and its minimum impedance is higher than the 4.1 ohms of the Bronze 500.
Pairing
With average sensitivity and a load that stays relatively high, the Silver 200 7G is an easy match for mid-power integrated amplifiers. Leave some room between the rear port and the wall behind. Rooms of about 20 m2 suit the size, and the in-room bass extension makes a subwoofer optional.
Alternatives
The Monitor Audio Silver 500 7G is the larger Silver 7G tower, a three-way design with an 800 Hz lower crossover.
