The Signature Alpha is the three-woofer tower of the Signature range from Triangle, designed and assembled by hand at the company's workshop in Soissons, France. The range was created after the brand's 30th anniversary using technology developed for the Magellan series, and it comprises the Theta standmount, the Delta and Alpha floorstanders and a centre model. At about 1.3 m tall, the Alpha is aimed at listening rooms larger than 30 m2.

Key specs that matter

Its reflex-loaded cabinet holds five drivers arranged in three ways. A 25 mm titanium dome tweeter in a horn crosses over at 2,600 Hz to a 16.5 cm midrange, which hands the band below 290 Hz to three 16.5 cm woofers. Triangle quotes 32 Hz to 22,000 Hz within 3 dB and 92 dB/W/m sensitivity. Impedance is 8 ohm nominal with a 3.3 ohm minimum, continuous power handling is 140 W, and the suggested amplifier range is 60 to 500 W into 8 ohm. The cabinet measures 233 x 1,270 x 372 mm, or 340 x 1,330 x 372 mm with its pedestal, and weighs 34.5 kg net. It is offered in Golden Oak, Mahogany, black and white.

Engineering and use context

The TZ2550 tweeter uses a phase plug made for the titanium dome and a horn of injected aluminium first developed for the Magellan project. The horn is half-recessed into a pod, and the rear chamber behind the dome has a larger compression volume that absorbs energy and stops waves returning into the dome. The midrange cone is paper on a small pleated surround. All three woofers were built for this model alone, with double ferrite magnets, double-layer voice coils and inverted half-roll rubber surrounds, and each glass fibre membrane is backed by a second paper membrane for stiffness. The twin vent system isolates the woofers in separate volumes and discharges their rear wave through a single front port, and Triangle says this front venting allows the speaker to stand as close as 20 cm to a wall. Bass and midrange filters are separated to avoid electromagnetic interference between them. The enclosure walls are built from seven high-density fibreboard layers pressed to 21 mm in total, and seven to ten coats of paint produce the piano lacquer surface. Twin sets of terminals make bi-wiring and bi-amplification possible, and a magnetic grille, steel spikes and rubber feet are supplied.

Pairing

The wide recommended amplifier window makes the Alpha workable with moderate integrated amplifiers as well as large power amplifiers, but the low impedance minimum favours designs with good current delivery. With two stereo amplifiers, one can feed the woofers and the other the midrange and tweeter through the separate posts.

Alternatives

The Triangle Signature Delta is the smaller Signature tower, using two woofers in place of three and reaching down to 35 Hz.
