The Magellan Cello 40th is a three-way tower loudspeaker from Triangle, a French maker whose production site is in Soissons. It belongs to the Magellan 40th collection issued in 2023 for the company's 40th anniversary, a four-model family that also includes the Quatuor 40th tower, the Duetto 40th compact model and the Voce 40th centre speaker. Buyers can choose between Zebrano, Golden Oak, Space Black and Space White finishes, and the European price was EUR 12,000 per pair.
Key specs that matter
Per side, Triangle fits four drivers. A TZ2900PMMG tweeter with a 1 inch magnesium alloy dome sits inside a horn, a T16GMF100-V2 midrange of 6.5 inches uses a natural paper cone with a fabric surround, and two T16GMMT15GC2 woofers of the same 6.5 inch size have a three-layer sandwich cone with a cellulose honeycomb core framed by glass fibre. Triangle rates the bandwidth at 35 Hz to 30,000 Hz within 3 dB and sensitivity at 90 dB for 1 W at 1 m. Nominal impedance is 8 ohm with a minimum of 3.4 ohm, and the rated power handling figure is 200 W. Each cabinet is 250 mm wide and 340 mm deep and weighs 38.8 kg net, or 49.5 kg in its carton.
Engineering and use context
Multi-layer HDF forms the enclosure, which has rounded corners and an inner skeleton of bracing, while the bass reflex tube fires from the front baffle. Piano finishes receive twelve layers of clear lacquer. The brand fits its LHS2 cooling system to the drivers - a heat sink ring pressed against the back of the yoke collects heat given off by the core and the yoke, and Triangle links this to the high power handling. The magnesium dome tweeter with its horn loading is a new part shared across the Magellan 40th range. Each speaker ships with eight metal spikes, eight counter spikes and a separate SPEC spike, plus a magnetic protection grille. The shipping box measures 545 x 1,230 x 455 mm, and one carton holds a single speaker. Triangle quotes the Cello 40th for listening rooms of 15 to 50 m2, and the anniversary range draws on historic Triangle designs, with the Magellan Grand Concert named as a main reference for this model.
Pairing
A double terminal block on each cabinet accepts two cable runs per speaker, or a split between two amplifier channels feeding the bass and the upper range. Given the low minimum impedance, the partner amplifier has to handle loads far under the nominal figure without strain.
Alternatives
Within the same anniversary collection, the Triangle Magellan Quatuor 40th is the second floorstanding model alongside the Cello 40th.
