The Magellan Quatuor 40th is the tallest model of the Magellan 40th anniversary edition from Triangle, the French loudspeaker maker. This three-way tower carries six drive units, among them a tweeter on the rear panel, and the maker quotes a price of EUR 14,000 per pair.

Key specs that matter

Two 25 mm TZ2900 horn tweeters with magnesium alloy domes work with a 16 cm midrange on a paper diaphragm and three 16 cm woofers. Rated response runs from 33 Hz to 30,000 Hz within 3 dB. Sensitivity is 91 dB, nominal impedance is 8 ohm with a minimum of 3.4 ohm, and power handling is 260 W. Triangle recommends amplifiers between 80 and 500 W. Each cabinet is 250 mm wide, 1,280 mm high and 340 mm deep and weighs 47 kg.

Engineering and use context

The horn tweeter uses a new dome made from magnesium alloy. All four cone drivers share one size, so the three woofers together offer three times the cone area of the midrange. The midrange cone is suspended on small pleated surrounds. The woofers use Triangle's SVA diaphragm, a sandwich of two fibreglass sheets around an inner core of cellulose pulp, meant to combine stiffness with low mass. The second tweeter on the back of the cabinet radiates energy to the rear as well as to the front, which Triangle says simplifies placement and spreads the level more evenly across the room. The curved cabinet is built from successive layers of high density fibreboard, each 3 mm thick, so that no internal walls run parallel to each other and standing waves inside the enclosure are avoided. Four finishes are listed - Zebrano, Space Black, Golden Oak and Space White.

Pairing

Triangle suggests the Quatuor 40th for rooms larger than 30 m2, so a space of 20 m2 would be on the small side for it, while the smaller Cello 40th is rated by the maker for 25 to 50 m2. The high sensitivity lets modest amplifiers reach useful levels, yet the chosen amplifier also needs current reserve for a demanding load dip. With three woofers per side, the recommended power window reaches up to large transistor designs while still including capable valve units.

Alternatives

The Triangle Magellan Cello 40th is the shorter tower in the anniversary series, a 1,080 mm tall three-way with two woofers, 90 dB sensitivity and 38.8 kg weight.
