The S5 2024 is a three-way tower from Magico of California that continues the new-generation S Series that began in 2023 with the S3. Magico presents the model as part of its 20th anniversary and describes it as offering an expanded performance envelope in a substantially larger cabinet than the S3, while keeping the curved aluminium styling of the range.

Key specs that matter

In total the speaker carries four drivers. Its 28 mm tweeter has a diamond-coated beryllium diaphragm driven by a neodymium motor. The 6 inch midrange has a 3 inch voice coil, and two 10 inch woofers each carry a 5 inch titanium voice coil. Magico quotes 20 Hz to 50 kHz as an in-room response, 88 dB sensitivity and a nominal 4 ohm impedance. The recommended amplifier power is 50 to 1000 watts. Each cabinet measures 122 cm high, 49 cm deep and 48.5 cm wide, and the weight is 118 kg.

Engineering and use context

During development Magico measured panel vibration with a Polytec laser vibrometer to remove unwanted cabinet contributions, and used a Klippel near-field scanner to take three-dimensional acoustic measurements for on-axis and off-axis optimisation. The curved aluminium enclosure was shaped with 3D modelling to reduce internal resonances and raise stiffness, and its internal volume is 31 percent larger than in the previous S5. Both the midrange and the woofers use Nano-Tec Gen 8 cones, which combine an aluminium honeycomb core with carbon-fibre skins reinforced with graphene. The midrange motor has two neodymium magnets, a full copper cap and a titanium voice coil, and it sits in a long-life foam surround. The woofers are specified for up to 13 mm of linear movement with minimal distortion. Twelve finishes are offered - six Softec surfaces and six high-gloss options.

Pairing

Any amplifier used with the S5 2024 has to cope with a demanding load and deliver power inside the window Magico recommends. Within the same S Series Magico also offers the SCC centre channel and the SSub powered subwoofer, which has two 13 inch drivers and a 15 Hz to 150 Hz response, if a stereo pair is to grow into a bigger installation.

Within the S Series, the Magico S3 2023 is a smaller floorstander with a 5 inch midrange, two 9 inch bass drivers, a 24 Hz to 50 kHz response and a weight of 101 kg.
