Announced in December 2017 by Magico of Hayward, California, the A3 opened the A Series, the first range meant to bring a Magico speaker to a wider audience, at a US price of USD 9,800 per pair and with deliveries starting in Q1 2018. It carries four drivers in a sealed enclosure built from machined 6061 T6 aircraft grade aluminium, and it borrows its tweeter platform from the company's M-Project development.

Key specs that matter

An MB7 tweeter with a 28 mm pure beryllium dome sits above a 6 inch midrange and two 7 inch bass drivers. The maker gives 88 dB for sensitivity and 4 ohm for nominal impedance. Recommended amplification runs from a minimum of 50 W RMS to a maximum of 300 W. Each cabinet is 112 cm tall, 27 cm deep and 23 cm wide and weighs 49.9 kg, and the finish is black brushed aluminium.

Engineering and use context

A newly designed beryllium diaphragm with an optimised dome surface is fitted to the tweeter, driven by a customised neodymium motor in an improved back chamber with new damping materials, aimed at extended linear voice coil travel and higher power handling. The midrange cone combines Multi-Wall carbon fibre with a layer of XG Nanographene, and its overhung neodymium motor with extra-large magnets drives a 75 mm pure titanium voice coil. Both woofers use Gen 8 Nano-Tec cones with graphene, and titanium voice coils feature across the neodymium motor systems. The enclosure is anodised, and inside it a complex bracing structure adds stiffness and mass to suppress panel resonance, and a calibrated sub-enclosure keeps the midrange isolated from the back-wave pressure of the woofers. The dividing network follows the Magico Elliptical Symmetry Crossover topology with 24 dB per octave Linkwitz-Riley slopes, uses Mundorf parts from Germany, and targets wide bandwidth, phase linearity and low intermodulation distortion. Magico developed the drivers and cabinet with Finite Element Analysis covering acoustical, mechanical, electromagnetic and thermal behaviour. A four-point spiked outrigger base couples the speaker to the floor.

Pairing

A load this demanding, together with the stated power window, favours a transistor amplifier, stereo or a pair of monoblocks, that stays stable into low impedance, in a room of around 20 m2.

Alternatives

Within the same series, the Magico A5 is a three-way, five-driver model using three 9 inch woofers and weighing about 82 kg.
