The A5 is the largest model of Magico's A Series, from the California company founded by Alon Wolf in 2004 and based in Hayward, where it machines and builds its speakers without outsourcing. It brings the sealed aluminium enclosure and driver technology of Magico's Q and M Series to a more accessible price. It was Magico's first model with a dedicated 5 in midrange.
Key specs that matter
Five drivers in a sealed three-way layout comprise a 28 mm pure beryllium dome tweeter, a 127 mm midrange and three 229 mm woofers, with Graphene Nano-Tec cones on the midrange and woofers. Frequency response is 24 Hz to 50 kHz within 3 dB, sensitivity is 88 dB at 2.83 V and nominal impedance is 4 ohms. Recommended power is 50 to 1000 W. The speaker measures 267 x 1137 x 378.5 mm (W x H x D) including spikes and weighs 81.6 kg.
Engineering and use context
The midrange and woofer cones use a sandwich of graphene-layered carbon fibre around a core, and in the A5 the core changed from Rohacell foam to an aluminium honeycomb, stiffer yet still light. The 5 in midrange was sized to match the tweeter's dispersion and uses a new foam surround and a motor with a pure titanium voice coil and copper pole cap, which reduces eddy currents. It sits in its own sub-enclosure, protected from the bass drivers' back wave. The woofers have 5 in titanium voice coils, large copper caps and half an inch of linear excursion, with inductance below 0.18 mH, and produce 115 dB at 50 Hz and 1 m. The tweeter uses the geometry of Magico's M Series units, with a customised neodymium motor in a damped back chamber. The crossover is a 24 dB per octave Linkwitz-Riley network using Magico's Elliptical Symmetry topology. The midrange and woofers also share titanium voice coils and copper pole caps. The enclosure is machined entirely from 6061-T6 aircraft-grade aluminium with complex internal bracing, finished in black anodising with a matte or eggshell sheen. Grilles are optional, and the speakers stand on spikes. The warranty is five years The A5 was launched at USD 24,800 per pair. The A Series began with the A1 stand-mount in 2019.
Pairing
As a moderately sensitive 4 ohm load, the A5 needs a high-current amplifier, and Magico's recommended power range allows the largest solid-state designs. Its 24 Hz sealed bass suits rooms of 25 to 50 m2.
Alternatives
Magico's A3 offers the same sealed aluminium concept in a smaller tower.
