Magico announced the new S2 on December 3, 2024, with shipping from the second quarter of 2025, aiming to create the most compact three-way model the S Series has ever had. This four-driver tower is priced in the UK at GBP 41,500 per pair in Softec and GBP 49,998 in High Gloss. Its cabinet is formed from extruded aluminium, and Magico describes the extrusion as the largest single piece it has produced.
Key specs that matter
A 28 mm pure beryllium tweeter with a diamond coating is joined by a 5 inch midrange and two 7 inch woofers. Magico quotes a range of 26 Hz to 50 kHz, sensitivity of 86.5 dB and a nominal impedance of 4 ohm, and recommends amplification between 50 W and 300 W. Maximum output is 109 dB at 55 Hz measured at 1 meter. With its outriggers the speaker is 1,104 mm tall, 395 mm wide and 345 mm deep, and it weighs 60 kg.
Engineering and use context
The tweeter design is derived from the M9 at the top of the Magico range and runs on a neodymium motor. According to Magico, the compact cabinet is intended to bring the performance of the brand to a smaller footprint that fits a wider variety of listening spaces. All drivers share Gen 8 Nano-Tec cones, an aluminium honeycomb core sandwiched between graphene-reinforced carbon fibre skins, and both midrange and woofers sit on a third-generation chassis. The midrange uses a 75 mm pure titanium voice coil with a full copper cap, a neodymium motor with two extra-large magnets and a 16 mm air gap. The newly developed woofers each carry a 3 inch voice coil. A full-length vertical brace is integral to the extrusion, and the enclosure was developed with Polytec laser vibrometry and 3D modeling to limit resonance and diffraction. Crossover duty falls to a three-way Elliptical Symmetry Crossover with 24 dB Linkwitz-Riley filters, built with Mundorf M-Resist Ultra foil resistors and copper foil paper coils and aimed at frequency and phase linearity. The speaker rests on a three-foot outrigger system that uses constrained-layer damping. Finishes come in two groups - six Softec matte colours and six High Gloss polished, clear-coated options.
Pairing
A modest sensitivity rating together with a demanding load suits a solid-state amplifier that can deliver towards the upper end of the recommended window, in a listening room of about 20 m2.
Alternatives
Larger in the S Series lineup, the Magico S3 2023 moves to twin 9 inch woofers and weighs 101 kg.
