Magico announced the S3 2023 on December 12, 2022, as a new version of its three-way S3 tower, with first units leaving the factory in Q1 2023. In the UK it cost GBP 56,998 per pair in M-Cast textured powder coat and GBP 66,000 in M-Coat high gloss paint. It uses technology distilled from the development of the M9, and Magico states that the new enclosure is 30 % quieter than the one it replaces.
Key specs that matter
Drivers are a 28 mm diamond-coated beryllium dome tweeter, a 5 inch midrange and two 9 inch bass drivers. Frequency response is 24 Hz to 50 kHz, sensitivity is 88 dB and nominal impedance is 4 ohm, and Magico advises amplifiers from 50 to 750 watts. Bass output reaches 112 dB at 50 Hz measured at 1 meter. Each speaker is 112 cm tall and 43 cm deep, 30 cm wide at the cabinet with a 432 mm outrigger span, and weighs 101 kg.
Engineering and use context
FEA work shaped the tweeter diaphragm geometry, while a neodymium motor shaped to fit the curved front baffle works with a new, acoustically improved back chamber. The midrange cone has a honeycomb aluminium core with graphene and carbon fibre layers inside and out, and it is held by a long-life foam surround meant for faster settling time. Its new underhung neodymium motor uses two extra-large magnets and a pure copper pole cap that limits eddy currents. Each woofer carries a Graphene Nano-Tec cone, graphene being a hexagonal carbon lattice that Magico credits with 50 times the tensile strength of high carbon steel, with a honeycomb aluminium core between layers of CF Graphene, a 5 inch pure titanium voice coil, 13 mm of linear excursion and a stabilised magnetic field. The enclosure is assembled from four extruded aluminium panels between 13 mm and 51 mm thick, each machined with an edgeless perimeter, and a massive curved top plate pitches upward to limit diffraction above a thicker baseplate. An in-house 3D laser interferometry system measures every S3 panel at up to 1000 points per side, and a Klippel NFS rig provides full-sphere acoustic measurements. A new three-point outrigger system with redesigned feet lowers the centre of gravity.
Pairing
A demanding load like this points to a capable solid-state stereo amplifier or monoblocks, and the cabinet mass suits a room of 20 m2 or more.
Alternatives
Below it sits the Magico S2 2025, a more compact S Series tower with a pair of 7 inch woofers and 86.5 dB sensitivity.
