Scansonic HD makes the Q3 in Denmark as the slimmest passive tower of its Q series, where assembly quality and fit and finish receive particular attention. Scansonic describes the Q models as mini Raidho speakers with a high level of trickle-down technology from its parent super high-end brand. The line also contains the Q8 and the larger Q10, and the brand says the series blends with any contemporary interior. It combines two 5.25-inch carbon-coned drivers with a ribbon tweeter inspired by Raidho designs.

Key specs that matter

Per cabinet, a ribbon tweeter works with a 5.25-inch mid/woofer and a 5.25-inch woofer in a 2.5-way topology. Scansonic quotes a frequency response of 52 Hz to 20 kHz at the minus 6 dB points, a sensitivity of 86 dB and an impedance of 6 ohm. The crossover divides the signal at two points, 285 Hz and 2600 Hz. The bass reflex cabinet, with three stacked ports on the rear, measures 170 mm wide, 1000 mm high and 395 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 20.5 kg. Buyers can choose black or white high gloss, or natural walnut veneer. The EU retail price including VAT was EUR 7,000 per pair in black high gloss and EUR 8,000 in walnut.

Engineering and use context

In the 2.5-way arrangement, the second woofer assists only in the bass region, where power demands are highest, leaving the mid/woofer to handle the range up to the tweeter. Every Q woofer is formed of one-piece moulded woven carbon fibre, and they are bespoke drivers designed and developed by Raidho engineers for this range. The tweeter is a sealed quasi-ribbon type, and woven carbon fibre diffusers are part of the Q design. The Q cabinets are derived from Raidho design principles, including the Raidho view that a very rigid construction does not have to be heavy, and the crossover is built on the same principle as in Raidho products. Products in the most critical series are built in-house in Denmark by skilled craftsmen.

Pairing

Scansonic sets the minimum amplifier power at 50 W. Each cabinet carries a single pair of speaker terminals and rests on absorption feet fixed to metal outriggers. The Q10 of the same series targets large rooms and home cinema, and for a multichannel system the brand also offers the L10 centre speaker and L12 SUB active subwoofer.

Alternatives

The Scansonic HD Q8 is the next Q series floorstander, a 3-way design with an 8-inch carbon woofer and a 37 Hz to 20 kHz response at minus 6 dB.
