The Platinum 300 3G is a model of the third-generation Platinum series from Monitor Audio, a three-way floorstander launched at GBP 11,500, EUR 14,000 or USD 15,500 per pair, with a later US listing of USD 17,900. It sits above the Platinum 200 3G in the series and uses the same RDT III cones and MPD III tweeter as the Platinum 100 3G stand-mount.

Key specs that matter

Two 8-inch RDT III bass drivers, a 4-inch RDT III midrange and an MPD III tweeter are crossed over at 650 Hz and 3 kHz. The -6 dB response is 25 Hz to 60 kHz free-field and 17 Hz to 60 kHz in-room. Sensitivity is 88 dB, impedance is 4 ohms nominal with a 4.0 ohm minimum at 3.75 kHz, and power handling is 400 W, with 200 to 800 W recommended. A rear port is tuned to 32 Hz. The cabinet measures 1,131 x 430 x 525 mm and weighs 53.6 kg.

Engineering and use context

The Platinum 300 3G has no conventional plinth. Instead, four cast outriggers joined by a steel brace carry the cabinet, and the crossover is mounted on this frame, isolated from the enclosure and its vibration. The cabinet walls are laminated MDF, curved and braced, 18 to 21 mm thick, with a 36 mm front baffle. Each RDT III cone bonds skins of carbon fibre and aluminium to a honeycomb of Nomex, and Monitor Audio uses this construction for all three cone sizes in the speaker. Because the midrange covers only the band between the crossovers, the pair of woofers takes the low range alone, and the MPD III tweeter has a pleated diaphragm. Compared with the Platinum 100 3G, sensitivity is 3 dB higher than its 85 dB, while the Platinum 100 3G is paired with far smaller amplifiers of 75 to 300 W. It is 261 mm shorter than the Hyphn and weighs about half as much as its 106.9 kg, while sharing its RDT III and MPD III driver technology.

Pairing

The 4 ohm load and the high recommended power point to large stereo amplifiers or monoblocks, even though sensitivity is moderate. The deep in-room bass means a subwoofer is not needed. Given its weight, the Platinum 300 3G suits rooms of 20 m2 and larger with space behind for the rear port.
