Monitor Audio released the Gold 300 6G as part of the sixth generation of its Gold loudspeaker line, a family that had been running for 36 years when the 6G models arrived. It sits below the Gold 500 6G among the towers and shares its driver technology with the Gold 100 6G, Gold 50 6G, Gold C250 6G and Gold On-Wall 6G. The launch price in the USA was USD 5,250 per pair, later listed at USD 5,600.
Key specs that matter
This passive 3-way design combines an MPD III tweeter, a 76 mm HDT C-CAM midrange unit and two 152 mm HDT C-CAM bass drivers. Crossover points are 800 Hz and 2.7 kHz. Free-field response spans 45 Hz to 60 kHz at -6 dB, and in-room response starts at 28 Hz. Sensitivity is 87 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm with a minimum of 3.9 ohm at 165 Hz. Continuous power handling to CTA 426-B is 250 W, and maximum peak output is 117 dB (AES75, Z-weighted). With accessories the speaker stands 1098 mm tall, 339 mm wide and 463 mm deep, and it weighs 21.2 kg.
Engineering and use context
HDT stands for Hexagonal Diaphragm Technology - an asymmetric hexagonal pattern stamped into the cone surface to break up symmetrical resonance modes. The cone itself is a sandwich with a Nomex honeycomb layer between aluminium and carbon fibre skins, whereas C-CAM, according to the maker, gives a stiffer and more fatigue-resistant diaphragm than standard aluminium. Compared with the RST II cones of the Silver 7G series, the HDT pattern moves breakup about 10 percent higher in frequency. For the treble the maker uses its MPD III, whose folded micro-pleated film occupies a square area so that output spreads evenly both sideways and up and down. Bass loading uses a HiVe II port tuned to 35 Hz. The cabinet rests on cast aluminium outriggers, grilles attach magnetically, and buyers choose from Satin White, High Gloss Black or Macassar veneer. The warranty runs for 5 years.
Pairing
Monitor Audio recommends 130 to 500 W RMS on music signals, with the power handling figure named as the optimum. The impedance minimum sits in the upper bass, so any partner amplifier ought to be specified for continuous output into 4 ohm rather than 8 ohm only. Owners building a larger system can add the Gold 50 6G or the Gold On-Wall 6G as surround speakers from the same range. For a home cinema the Gold C250 6G centre uses the same twin 6-inch and 3-inch driver arrangement.
Alternatives
The Monitor Audio Gold 500 6G is the larger Gold tower, with twin 8-inch HDT bass drivers, 88.5 dB sensitivity and 33 Hz port tuning.
