Revel, part of HARMAN, builds the F228Be as a three-way floorstanding loudspeaker for its PerformaBe series. At first PerformaBe consisted of only this tower and the M126Be bookshelf model. In 2019 Revel added the larger F328Be tower, shown at CEDIA 2019, the smaller F226Be tower with two 6.5 inch woofers and the C426Be centre. Revel lists the F228Be at USD 10,000 per pair.
Key specs that matter
Drivers are a 25 mm (1 in) beryllium dome tweeter loaded by an Acoustic Lens waveguide, a 130 mm (5.25 in) midrange and two 200 mm (8 in) woofers, all three cones made of Deep Ceramic Composite (DCC) aluminium and mounted on cast frames. Crossover points are 260 Hz and 2.1 kHz. Revel gives low-frequency extension of 44 Hz at -3 dB, 33 Hz at -6 dB and 30 Hz at -10 dB, with the upper limit at 40 kHz (-6 dB). The cabinet measures 1182.5 x 341.8 x 375.3 mm (H x W x D). Each speaker weighs 37.2 kg. Finishes are high-gloss black, white, walnut and metallic silver, and the top panel is painted metallic black with raised electroform badging.
Engineering and use context
The beryllium tweeter is driven by dual 85 mm ceramic magnets. Revel credits beryllium with 4.5 times the stiffness of aluminium or titanium diaphragms, three times their damping and half their weight. Its waveguide is a fifth-generation design in cast aluminium with a ceramic coating, and Revel shaped it to follow the directivity of the midrange driver around the upper crossover. For PerformaBe the midrange received a larger DCC diaphragm, a bigger voice coil and a ceramic motor structure, changes Revel credits with higher efficiency, less compression, wider dynamic range, lower distortion and greater power handling. In the midrange and tweeter circuits the crossover uses only film capacitors and air core inductors, combined with the high-order slopes Revel applies across its ranges. Revel calls the tweeter all-new for this model. Grilles attach with magnets, and the input panel carries dual gold-plated binding posts linked by shorting straps.
Pairing
Revel recommends 50 to 350 W RMS of amplifier power for the F228Be. Sensitivity is 90 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, with a nominal impedance of 8 ohm. For a multichannel front stage the series offers the C426Be three-way centre, which also uses a 5.25 inch midrange and a beryllium tweeter, with its four 6.5 inch woofers arrayed horizontally.
Alternatives
The Revel F328Be is the larger PerformaBe tower, fitted with three 8 inch woofers instead of two.
