The Studio2 is the three-way floorstander in Revel's Ultima2 series, sitting below the Salon2. Revel says the Studio2 carries all of the brand's latest technical developments of that generation in a somewhat smaller cabinet, and positions it for rooms where space is limited or where the output of the larger model is not needed. Ultima2 documentation from late 2007 came from Harman Specialty Group, and the range also included the Voice2 centre and the Gem2.
Key specs that matter
Revel fits a 1 inch (25 mm) pure beryllium dome tweeter, a 5.25 inch (133 mm) titanium cone midrange and two 8 inch (203 mm) titanium cone woofers. The three-way network crosses over at 230 Hz and 2 kHz with high-order acoustic slopes. Frequency range is 32 Hz to 45 kHz at -3 dB, and low-frequency extension reaches 25 Hz at -6 dB and 21 Hz at -10 dB. Revel quotes an in-room response within 0.5 dB of its target from 31 Hz to 18 kHz and a listening window response within 1 dB from 33 Hz to 20 kHz. Height is 1176 mm, width 351 mm and depth 521 mm. Net weight is 50.9 kg, with a shipping weight of 63.5 kg. Buyers choose between high-gloss piano black and mahogany.
Engineering and use context
For Ultima2, Revel developed new woofers and midranges using twin neodymium magnets in the motor, distortion reduction measures and voice coils of oversized diameter. The beryllium tweeter is loaded by a third-generation waveguide. Each cabinet is a rounded single-piece structure of nine laminated layers with thick walls and extensive internal bracing, and its computer-designed baffle limits diffraction. Woofer, midrange and tweeter filters sit on separate boards so their components do not interfere. During manufacture every Studio2 is tuned by hand to match the production reference within a fraction of a decibel. The in-room figure is a prediction built from 72 anechoic measurements spaced 10 degrees apart on both axes. A hidden cast aluminium panel behind a rear door holds the terminals, a low-frequency switch with Normal, Contour and Boundary positions, and a tweeter level control with five settings across a narrow range. Combination spikes and glides suit tile, hardwood or carpet.
Pairing
The Studio2 presents a 6 ohm nominal load that falls to 3.7 ohm at 90 Hz, and sensitivity is 87.7 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m. Revel notes that the moderate phase angles let a reasonably designed amplifier drive it. High and low frequency binding posts, gold plated and bridged by jumpers, allow single-wired, bi-wired or bi-amplified connection, and horizontal bi-amping with non-identical amplifiers requires matched gain.
Alternatives
The Revel Salon2 is the four-way Ultima2 floorstander, using three 8 inch woofers, a 6.5 inch mid-woofer and a 4 inch midrange.
