The F1-8S is a floorstanding member of the Fyne Audio F1 Series, designed by Dr Paul Mills and his team for smaller listening rooms. It places the company's IsoFlare driver and a bespoke crossover in an elaborately finished cabinet. The speaker is designed, hand built and hand finished at Fyne Audio's UK manufacturing facility in a lacquered burr walnut finish, listed as Piano Gloss Walnut. The UK price is GBP 13,000 per pair.

Key specs that matter

It is a 2-way design using one 200 mm IsoFlare point source driver whose multi-fibre mid and bass cone ends in a FyneFlute surround. A 25 mm magnesium alloy dome compression tweeter sits at its centre, with neodymium magnets used throughout, and the two units divide at 1.8 kHz. Frequency response is quoted as 30 Hz to 34 kHz at -6 dB typical in room, sensitivity as 91 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m and nominal impedance as 8 ohm. Continuous power handling is 100 W RMS with 400 W peak, and Fyne Audio recommends amplifiers of 20 to 200 W RMS. Standing 1086 mm tall, 335 mm wide and 445 mm deep without spikes, each speaker weighs 30 kg net.

Engineering and use context

The cabinet uses a twin-cavity BassTrax ported design, with the port firing downward onto a Tractrix diffuser. Because the tweeter is mounted in the throat of the main driver, the output is time aligned from a single point. Its crossover is Deep Cryogenically Treated and uses 2nd order low-pass and 1st order high-pass filters. F1 Series enclosures use pressed birch plywood of high density, braced extensively and stood on a heavyweight machined aluminium plinth, with burr walnut inlay on the front and top. Every F1 model is made and checked at Fyne Audio's Glasgow headquarters, and the driver sits on a rigid cast aluminium chassis coupled to the internal bracing spars through a semi-compliant bonding material. Two potentiometer controls are fitted. One adjusts high-frequency energy across the whole treble range above the crossover by plus or minus 3 dB, and the other covers the band from 2.5 kHz to 5.0 kHz by the same amount.

Pairing

Fyne Audio states that the sensitivity makes the F1-8S compatible with amplifiers ranging from single-ended triode valve models to high-power solid-state designs. Its bi-wire panel accepts two cable pairs per speaker. The S-Trax position is 69 mm and the SuperTrax position 45 mm measured from the front edge, for mounting the brand's supertweeters.
