The Børresen 03 is the standard version of the mid-size floorstander in the 0-series from Børresen Acoustics in Denmark. Compared with the 02, it adds a second pair of woofers and a taller, deeper enclosure, which lowers the rated bass limit, while retaining the copper-ring motors and the untreated metalwork that the Cryo and Silver Supreme editions replace.

Key specs that matter

The 03 carries five drive units per cabinet - a Børresen planar ribbon tweeter and four 5 inch iron-free bass/midrange drivers. Børresen specifies 35 Hz to 50 kHz, 88 dB sensitivity at 1 W, an impedance above 4 ohm and an amplifier of more than 50 W. The cabinet is 124.1 cm tall, 30.5 cm wide and 58.0 cm deep, and one speaker weighs 38.0 kg. Walnut veneer and black high gloss are the finish options.

Engineering and use context

With four small woofers rather than one large cone, the 03 spreads bass duty over a larger total membrane area while each unit keeps a moving cone of only 5.5 grams, built as carbon skins over a 4 mm Nomex honeycomb. Every woofer has the patented Børresen motor, in which four neodymium ring magnets and two solid copper discs replace the usual iron, giving 1.1 tesla of flux and a voice-coil inductance near 0.04 mH. The copper also works as a heat sink, which the maker links to high power handling. The RP94 tweeter is a closed ribbon, transformer-free, starting at about 2.5 kHz. A serial crossover makes the drivers share the same current flow across the crossover region, using resin-impregnated foil inductors, small stacked-foil capacitors of military grade and low-noise metal strip resistors. The block-milled compressed-wood enclosure is braced and carries solid walnut inserts, with a vented tweeter section and bass ports tuned by the factory. Ansuz Darkz T2S decouplers are fitted as standard under the cabinet, and the ground cross plate has adjustable feet that can rest on further Darkz units. Each Darkz is a stack of three discs held apart by three titanium balls, and four alloy grades are sold. All of these components are engineered and assembled by the company itself.

Pairing

The company pairs the 03 with the Aavik C-280 preamplifier and P-280 power amplifier and Ansuz Speakz D-TC2 speaker cable. The low impedance calls for a stable solid-state amplifier with some current reserve fits the design.

The Børresen 03 Cryo Edition uses this five-driver cabinet with all metal parts cryogenically treated for higher conductivity.
