The Børresen 02 Cryo Edition is the middle step of the 02 floorstander from Børresen Acoustics of Denmark, placed between the standard 02 and the Silver Supreme Edition. The difference is a deep-freeze process applied to every metal component of the loudspeaker before assembly, while the enclosure and driver complement are carried over unchanged.

Key specs that matter

According to the maker, the cryogenic step raises metal conductivity by 6 to 8 percent and lowers the magnet system inductance to 0.0038 mH, against 0.0040 mH in the untreated 02. Rated frequency response runs from 40 Hz to 50 kHz, sensitivity is 88 dB per watt and nominal impedance sits above 4 ohm, with an amplifier of over 50 W advised. Each cabinet measures 105.5 cm in height, 30.5 cm across and 51.0 cm front to back, weighs 30.5 kg and comes with either a walnut or a glossy black surface.

Engineering and use context

The treatment cycle occupies three days. In the first 24 hours the parts are cooled from room temperature to cryogenic levels, in the next 24 hours they are held near -196 degrees C, and in the final 24 hours they return gradually to room temperature, a slow ramp meant to avoid thermal stress. Børresen explains that the metal crystal structure contracts, alloying elements are pushed out of the grain and the material comes to resemble a monocrystal, while residual stress from solidification is reduced. The drive complement stays as in the standard model - an RP94 ribbon tweeter with a 0.01 gram moving mass plus two 5 inch iron-free bass/midrange units whose Nomex-core carbon cones weigh 5.5 grams. Their patented motors replace iron with neodymium ring magnets squeezing flux over copper discs. A series-type crossover with foil coils, capacitors built as stacked-foil arrays and low-noise strip resistors links them. The braced compressed-wood cabinet carries walnut inserts, a vented tweeter section and tuned bass ports, and Ansuz Darkz T2S decouplers are built in under the base plate.

Pairing

For this edition the manufacturer proposes separates rather than a single box - the Aavik C-280 preamplifier driving the Aavik P-280 power amplifier, connected with Ansuz Speakz D-TC2 speaker cable. Given the low recommended power, a quality integrated amplifier able to drive a low impedance is also workable.
