The Studio 620 is the compact two-way bookshelf speaker in the Studio 6 series from JBL, the HARMAN brand based in Northridge, California. The range dates from 2018 and 2019 and covers the 698, 690 and 680 towers, the 630, 620 and 610 compact models, the 625C and 665C centre channels and the 650P and 660P subwoofers. Within that family the 620 sits between the wall-mount 610 and the larger 630. Pairs are supplied in a Wood or a Dark Wood finish.
Key specs that matter
Bass and lower midrange come from a single 5.25 inch (133 mm) woofer with a PolyPlas cone. Treble is handled by the 2414H-1, a 1 inch (25 mm) compression driver that fires through an HDI waveguide. The crossover point is 2.3 kHz. JBL quotes a response of 50 Hz to 40 kHz, a nominal impedance of 6 ohm and a sensitivity of 84 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m. Each cabinet is 190 mm wide, 240 mm deep and 312 mm tall, and it weighs 6.88 kg.
Engineering and use context
Using a compression driver on a waveguide instead of a conventional dome is the core idea shared by every model of the Studio 6 line. The HDI profile is shaped to keep distortion low and spread the output widely, so listeners away from the centre seat get even coverage. The 620 is a bass-reflex enclosure with a tuned port on the back panel, and it has no keyholes or wall bracket, since JBL reserves wall mounting for the sealed Studio 610. The grille attaches with magnets and can be pulled straight off. Its one set of gold-plated connectors takes bare wire, pins, spades or banana plugs, and the speaker cannot be bi-wired, in contrast to the 698, 690 and 680 towers. Eight foot pads come in the box. It is made in Indonesia.
Pairing
Amplifier power should stay at or below 100 W, according to JBL. The moderate nominal impedance and low efficiency favour a stereo amplifier or AV receiver with reasonable current delivery rather than a very low-powered unit. In a home cinema the 620 can act as a front left and right pair next to a 625C or 665C centre, or as surround and surround-back channels in 5.1 and 7.1 layouts, where JBL suggests mounting height of 0.9 to 1.2 m. A 650P or 660P subwoofer from the same series extends the low end in either role.
Alternatives
The JBL Studio 630 is the bigger stand-mount sibling in the Studio 6 family, pairing a 6.5 inch PolyPlas woofer with the same compression driver, a 1.9 kHz crossover and an amplifier rating of up to 150 W.
