The Studio 630 is a compact two-way model in the JBL Studio 6 family, a HARMAN home-audio range dating from 2018 and 2019. It stands above the Studio 620 and the wall-hung Studio 610 and below the 680, 690 and 698 floorstanders, and it was designed to work either as a stereo pair or as part of a multichannel set with the series centre speakers and subwoofers. Buyers can choose Wood or Dark Wood.
Key specs that matter
JBL fits a 6.5 inch (165 mm) PolyPlas-cone woofer and a 1 inch (25 mm) compression driver, the JBL 2414H-1, mounted on an HDI waveguide. The two sections divide at 1.9 kHz. Rated frequency response runs from 45 Hz to 40 kHz, nominal impedance is 6 ohm and sensitivity is 85 dB measured with 2.83 V at 1 m. Dimensions are 230 mm in width, 280 mm in depth and 372 mm in height, and each speaker weighs 9.02 kg.
Engineering and use context
A dome tweeter is replaced here by a compression driver, a type of transducer that JBL uses throughout the Studio 6 lineup, and the HDI horn in front of it is profiled for low distortion and wide dispersion across the listening area. Compared with the 620, the larger cone and cabinet move the crossover lower than on the 620, which gives the horn more of the upper midrange to cover, and they add 5 Hz of extension at the bottom of the rated range. The cabinet is ported, with the tuned vent placed on the rear panel. There are no wall-mount keyholes, so the 630 is meant for stands, shelves or furniture, and eight pads for its base are packed with each pair. The grille is held by magnets. Connection is through a single set of gold-plated binding posts that accept bare wire, pin, spade and banana terminations, as bi-wire panels are reserved for the tower models.
Pairing
JBL gives a maximum amplifier rating of 150 W for this model. Its nominal impedance is within the comfort zone of the majority of home receivers and stereo integrateds, although the moderate efficiency means an amplifier with some reserve is more useful than a small low-output design. As front channels the 630 pairs with the 625C or 665C centre; the manual also shows it in surround and surround-back positions for 5.1 and 7.1 systems, and the 650P or 660P subwoofer covers the lowest octave.
Alternatives
The JBL Studio 620 is the smaller bookshelf option in the same series, built around a 5.25 inch woofer in a 312 mm tall cabinet, with 84 dB sensitivity and an amplifier limit of 100 W.
