The L82 Classic MkII is an 8-inch (200 mm) two-way bookshelf loudspeaker that JBL describes as the next evolution of its Classic Series, combining vintage styling with modern acoustic technology. The Classic Series began in 2018 with the L100 Classic, a recreation of the 1970s L100 Century, the first L82 Classic followed in 2020, and this MkII version was released in 2023. It is a two-driver bass-reflex design with its port on the front, housed in a real walnut satin wood veneer cabinet with smoked black front and rear baffles.

Key specs that matter

Nominal impedance is 8 ohms and sensitivity is 88 dB measured with 2.83 V at 1 m. JBL recommends amplifier power of 25 to 150 W RMS. The frequency response of 44 Hz to 40 kHz is quoted at -6 dB. A single crossover at 1.7 kHz hands over from the woofer to the tweeter, the same point as on the first version. With the front grille in place each cabinet measures 472.8 mm high, 281 mm wide and 296 mm deep, and one speaker weighs 12.8 kg.

Engineering and use context

Both drivers are new for the MkII, which is why their model numbers carry a 2. The bass and midrange unit is the JW200PW2-6, an 8-inch driver with JBL's white paper cone and a hemispherical dust cap, which JBL says now works more linearly with lower distortion. Above the crossover the JT025TI2-4 takes over, a 1-inch (25 mm) titanium dome tweeter fitted with the waveguide that JBL calls an acoustic lens. A high-frequency control on the front baffle lets the treble level be adjusted without reaching behind the cabinet. The internal crossover network was redesigned. Grille colour is chosen from three Quadrex foam options - black, orange or blue - while the walnut veneer is common to every version.

Pairing

The first L82 Classic had a single set of terminals, while the MkII has dual gold-plated screw terminals, so the cable can be split into two runs or the drivers fed from separate amplifier channels. The easy nominal load and the moderate recommended power ceiling suit integrated amplifiers and receivers that are not rated for 4 ohm loads. JBL offers dedicated JS-80 stands with a 7-degree upward tilt.

The JBL L52 Classic is the most compact two-way bookshelf design of the same series, built around a 5.25-inch pure pulp cone woofer and a 0.75-inch titanium dome tweeter with an acoustic lens waveguide in a walnut veneer cabinet.
