The R-40M is a compact passive two-way bookshelf speaker from the current generation of the Klipsch Reference series, introduced in 2021 by Klipsch Group, the Indianapolis company owned by Voxx International. It is the smaller companion to the R-50M in that generation and ships in a black textured wood grain vinyl finish. Its woofer borrows cone technology from the higher Reference Premiere line, according to Klipsch.

Key specs that matter

A single 4 inch spun-copper woofer made from thermoformed crystalline polymer, or TCP, handles bass and midrange, while a 1 inch aluminium tweeter with Linear Travel Suspension takes over above the crossover. The crossover point is 1,770 Hz. Klipsch rates frequency response at 71 Hz to 21 kHz within 3 dB and quotes sensitivity of 91 dB, measured in room with a 2.83 V input at 1 m under half-space anechoic conditions. Nominal impedance is 8 ohms, and power handling is 50 W continuous with 200 W peak. The cabinet measures 298 mm high, 146 mm wide and 216 mm deep, and each speaker weighs 3.2 kg. Wiring goes to a single set of gold-plated terminals.

Engineering and use context

The tweeter is mated to a square 90 x 90 degree Tractrix horn whose outer dimensions were enlarged for this generation, which Klipsch says extends directivity control over a wider band of frequencies. The tweeter suspension uses Kapton, a light and rigid film. On the woofer, Klipsch angled the TCP cone more steeply than before and added ribbing to raise stiffness, which reduces cone breakup toward the top of its range. The enclosure is built from reinforced 19 mm MDF with a new internal bracing layout intended to cut panel vibration. Bass loading is bass reflex, vented through a rear-firing port, so the back of the cabinet needs some clearance from a wall. Fasteners are concealed, the horn spans the full baffle width, and a low-profile grille attaches by magnets. The vinyl wrap is scratch resistant.

Pairing

Efficient by design, the R-40M is simple to drive, and its continuous power rating sets a sensible ceiling for the amplifier. Budget stereo integrateds and AV receivers fit that window. The limited bass extension of such a small woofer means a subwoofer is the usual partner in a home cinema setup, where the small cabinet also suits surround duty behind the listener.

Alternatives

In the same Reference generation, the Klipsch R-50M steps up to a 5.25 inch TCP woofer and deeper bass extension.
