The R-50M is a two-way bookshelf loudspeaker in the next-generation Reference series from Klipsch, the company based in Indianapolis, Indiana. It ranks as the bigger of two stand-mount models in this generation, above the R-40M, and it combines a horn-loaded tweeter with a single woofer in a compact bass reflex box. Klipsch sells it as a pair and also as the front speakers of an R-50M 5.1 home theater system.
Key specs that matter
Rated response extends from 58 Hz to 21 kHz within plus or minus 3 dB. Sensitivity is 92 dB, specified by Klipsch as an in-room figure and measured at 1 m with a 2.83 V input under half-space anechoic conditions. Power handling is 75 W continuous and 300 W peak. The nominal impedance is 8 ohm, and the crossover frequency is set at 1,560 Hz. Each speaker measures 354 mm high, 178 mm wide and 229 mm deep and weighs 5 kg. Wiring goes to one set of gold-plated binding posts per speaker.
Engineering and use context
The 1 inch aluminium LTS tweeter, whose Linear Travel Suspension is made of Kapton, is mated to a 90 x 90 degree square Tractrix horn. Klipsch says the outer dimensions of the horn were increased in this generation so that directivity stays controlled across a broader range of frequencies. Low and mid frequencies come from a single 5.25 inch woofer with a spun-copper cone made of Thermoformed Crystalline Polymer, a technology passed down from the Reference Premiere series. Klipsch notes steeper angling of the cone and added ribbing that raises rigidity and reduces cone breakup at higher frequencies. The enclosure is built from reinforced 19 mm MDF with a new bracing design intended to cut cabinet vibration, and the reflex loading uses a port on the back panel. The cabinet is wrapped in scratch-resistant black textured wood grain vinyl, the fasteners are hidden, the horn stretches across the whole front and the magnetic grille sits low on the front.
Pairing
Being sensitive and an easy load, the R-50M does not demand a high-powered amplifier, and the continuous rating sets the upper bound for sustained drive. In the R-50M 5.1 system, Klipsch groups the speaker with other Reference models to cover the remaining home theater channels.
Alternatives
The Klipsch R-40M is the more compact stand-mount sibling in this Reference generation, with a single 4 inch spun-copper woofer and 50 W continuous power handling.
