The R-41M is a small passive two-way bookshelf speaker in the Klipsch Reference series, built from 2018. The BLK/GNM code marks the black and gunmetal version. Klipsch pitches it both as a main pair for compact spaces and as a surround speaker within a larger Reference system, and it is supplied as a pair. The cabinet is covered in black textured wood grain vinyl.

Key specs that matter

The lower band is covered by one 4 inch spun-copper woofer with an injection molded graphite, or IMG, cone. A 1 inch LTS (Linear Travel Suspension) tweeter with an aluminium dome sits in a square 90 x 90 degree Tractrix horn and takes over at 1,730 Hz. Klipsch rates frequency response at 68 Hz to 21 kHz within 3 dB and sensitivity at 90 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m. Nominal impedance is 8 ohms. Power handling is 50 W continuous and 200 W peak. Each cabinet is 287 mm tall, 146 mm wide and 200 mm deep and weighs 3.2 kg. Four rubber feet are included in the box.

Engineering and use context

Klipsch chose an IMG cone because graphite in an injected polymer gives a light yet stiff diaphragm, which limits breakup and distortion in the woofer's working band. The tweeter suspension is made of Kapton, a thin film picked for low mass and rigidity. Combining the horn with this woofer is what Klipsch credits for the model's efficiency. The enclosure is reinforced MDF, and bass loading is bass reflex through a rear-firing port, so placement tight against a back wall will change the low end. Exposed fasteners on the baffle are a deliberate styling choice in this generation, and the grille is a low-profile design held by magnets. The textured vinyl wrap resists scratches. Amplifier cables attach to one set of gold-plated posts, which rules out bi-wiring.

Pairing

With its good sensitivity and easy nominal load, the R-41M does not need a powerful amplifier, and the continuous power rating is the figure to respect when choosing one. A modest stereo integrated or an AV receiver is a sensible match. Because the woofer is small and bass response stops well above the lowest octaves, a powered subwoofer fills in the lowest octaves and takes load off the small driver when crossed over from an AV receiver.

Alternatives

The Klipsch R-51M from the same Reference generation moves up to a 5.25 inch IMG woofer, higher sensitivity and deeper bass extension.
