The R-40PM is a pair of powered monitors in the Klipsch Reference line, first built in 2022. One cabinet carries the amplifier, the inputs and the controls, and it drives its passive partner over ordinary speaker wire, so the pair works without an AV receiver or a separate stereo amplifier. Klipsch also sells it as a set with the R-101SW 10 inch subwoofer. The finish is black, with copper-coloured woofer cones that stay visible when the low-profile magnetic grilles are taken off.
Key specs that matter
Frequency response is 60 Hz to 20 kHz, and Klipsch quotes a dynamic bass extension figure of 52 Hz, which reflects the bass equalisation applied by the built-in electronics. Maximum output is 100 dB. The amplifier is rated at 35 W per channel continuous at under 1 percent THD, or 70 W for the system, with 240 W given as the peak figure. Each cabinet pairs a 1 inch aluminium LTS tweeter on a square 90 by 90 degree Tractrix horn with a single 4 inch spun-copper TCP woofer, and the passive crossover sits at 1730 Hz. Each speaker measures 30 cm high, 14.5 cm wide and 25.65 cm deep, and the pair weighs 8.3 kg together.
Engineering and use context
TCP stands for thermoformed crystal polymer, and Klipsch says the steeper cone angle gives a smoother response and better integration with the tweeter at the crossover point. LTS, or Linear Travel Suspension, is the brand's name for the tweeter suspension, and the horn runs edge to edge across the front baffle. The MDF enclosures are bass-reflex designs with rear-firing ports, and the brand made them deeper than usual for a driver of this size to extend the low end. A phono stage is built in, and the phono or line input has a selector switch and a ground screw terminal, so a turntable connects without an extra preamplifier. The internal power supply accepts 100 to 240 V at 50 or 60 Hz. Supplied accessories are a remote with its pair of AAA cells, 4 m of speaker wire with soldered tips, a 2 m mains cord and a 2 m USB Type A to Type B cable.
Pairing
A computer connects through the USB digital input, a television through the optical input, and phones or tablets over Bluetooth. A 3.5 mm mini jack takes portable players, and the RCA phono or line pair accepts a turntable or a CD player. A single RCA line output feeds a powered subwoofer, which extends the pair below its small woofers in a 20 m2 room.
Alternatives
The Klipsch R-50PM is the larger powered pair in the same line, with a 5.25 inch woofer and 120 W of total system power.
