The LX-3 MKII is a two-way standmount model in Mission's LX MKII series, placed above the LX-1 MKII and LX-2 MKII by driver size. The British maker designed it for stereo on stands or for the front channels of a home cinema system, and in Australia a pair is priced at AUD 849.99. Finish options are Walnut Pearl, a white called Lux White and a black called Lux Black.

Key specs that matter

A 6.5-inch (165 mm) composite fibre bass and midrange cone is paired with a 25 mm microfibre dome tweeter, crossing over at 3.2 kHz. The response is quoted as 45 Hz to 20 kHz within 3 dB, with extension down to 40 Hz at -6 dB. Sensitivity is 88 dB at 2.83 V and 1 m, and peak SPL reaches 105 dB. Nominal impedance is 8 ohms with a minimum of 4.1 ohms, and Mission advises 20 to 120 W of amplification. The reflex enclosure holds 13.2 litres. Each cabinet stands 345 mm tall on its plinth, is 226 mm wide and 300 mm deep, with 8 mm more for the binding posts, and weighs 8.42 kg, while the packed gross weight is 18.9 kg.

Engineering and use context

Like other Mission designs, the LX-3 MKII mounts its tweeter under the woofer in what the company calls Inverted Driver Geometry. Placing the drivers this way evens out the distance each one has to the ear of a seated listener, which helps time alignment. Several features were taken over from Mission's more expensive QX and ZX series. The bass cone surround carries a serrated edge, and the tweeter is ringed with indentations, both intended to break up reflections from surrounding surfaces and give a smoother frequency response. The tweeter uses a neodymium magnet. Its crossover is a Linkwitz-Riley filter of the 4th order at 24 dB per octave, which Mission says improves off-axis behaviour and widens the listening area. The cabinet bracing was re-engineered using computer modelling for higher stiffness and less radiated cabinet noise.

Pairing

Mid-level efficiency and an impedance never falling under 4 ohms let the LX-3 MKII work with most integrated amplifiers and AV receivers inside Mission's suggested power band. The larger woofer and box give it more low-frequency reach than its smaller siblings, and it fits on stands in stereo or as the front pair with the LX-C2 MKII centre and the LX-10SUB MKII subwoofer.

Alternatives

The Mission LX-2 MKII is a smaller bookshelf speaker from the same series, using a 5-inch bass driver and rated for 20 to 100 W.
