The Mission 770 is a large two-way standmount from the British brand Mission, a re-engineered revival of the 770 model that was a familiar product in the 1970s and 1980s. The original was drawn up by Farad Azima, while the new version was designed by Peter Comeau, Director of Acoustic Design at parent company IAG. It is also manufactured in the UK, at an expanded Huntingdon site in Cambridgeshire that gained a production area of about 836 m2 and a new anechoic chamber.

Key specs that matter

A 200 mm mineral-loaded polypropylene mid/bass cone works with a 28 mm soft dome tweeter in a bass reflex enclosure, with a single crossover point. The rated response is 42 Hz to 20 kHz within 3 dB, and the -6 dB point falls at 30 Hz. Sensitivity is 88 dB for 2.83 V at 1 m into a nominal 8 ohm load that dips to a 6 ohm minimum, with a maximum SPL of 117 dB. The internal volume is 38.5 litres, and each cabinet stands 590 mm high, 300 mm wide and 322 mm deep with terminals, for a net weight of 19.2 kg.

Engineering and use context

The woofer sits on a die-cast chassis with large rear windows that cut early reflections back through the cone, and a low-density nitrile surround is matched to the cone to limit reflections from its edge. Minerals in the polypropylene raise stiffness over the original cone, and the motor was updated for modern power handling. The port is tuned very low and flared at both ends to smooth airflow. The tweeter uses a damped microfibre dome with a high flux ferrite magnet and a damped rear chamber that pushes the fundamental resonance far under the 2.9 kHz handover. More than 170 crossover versions were tried before the final circuit, which is split onto separate bass and treble boards with short signal paths, polypropylene capacitors and air core inductors. Where the old model used a thin wall damped with bitumen pads, the new cabinet is a twin-wall sandwich of high-density MDF and particle board bonded with high-damping adhesive, with internal bracing tying the driver to the baffle. Veneers are walnut or black with a white laminated front baffle.

Pairing

The 25 to 200 W recommended amplifier range and the gentle impedance minimum leave room for modest integrated amplifiers as well as larger transistor designs. Mission offers a dedicated 770 stand, made by hand in England from British steel and developed with Peter Comeau specifically for this cabinet.

Alternatives

Within the same bookshelf category Mission also makes the far smaller LX-2 MKII, a 305 mm tall two-way with a 130 mm composite fibre woofer.
