The QX-1 is the smaller one of the two stand-mount designs in the QX Series by British speaker maker Mission, which marked 40 years of audio work with this range. The series was designed for both hi-fi and AV setups and comprised five core hi-fi models - two bookshelf designs and three floorstanders - plus centre and surround speakers and an active subwoofer. Mission now lists the QX-1 as discontinued, and a QX-1 MKII version followed it.

Key specs that matter

This is a 2-way bass reflex design with a 135 mm long fibre composite cone for bass and midrange and a 38 mm textile ring dome tweeter, divided at 2.4 kHz. Mission quotes sensitivity of 87 dB at 2.0 V and 1 m and a peak SPL of 95 dB. Nominal impedance is 4 ohm, with compatibility for 8 ohm amplifiers and a minimum of 3.9 ohm. Frequency response is 55 Hz to 24 kHz within 3 dB, with bass extension to 48 Hz at -6 dB. The recommended amplifier power is 25 to 100 W. Internally the cabinet holds 8.1 litres and stands 280 mm high on its plinth, 195 mm wide and 250 mm deep plus 10 mm for the terminals, at a net weight of 6.2 kg per piece.

Engineering and use context

In the QX layout the tweeter sits below the bass driver, an inverted arrangement Mission uses to equalise the path length from both drivers so that their output coincides at a seated listener's head height. The ring dome tweeter attaches its voice coil partway down the textile dome, which Mission says avoids the cavitation effects of a conventional dome. The bass cone is seam-free and curvilinear, formed from soft pulp mixed with acrylic fibre. A slot port with internal ribs guides the airflow to avoid the chuffing noise often produced by reflex ports. The cabinet corners follow a semi-circular arc to reduce diffraction around the drivers, and aluminium top and bottom plates add mass and stiffness that lower resonance from the cabinet walls. The speaker is not magnetically shielded for use near a CRT screen.

Pairing

With a nominal load below 8 ohm and a dip under that, an amp or AV receiver specified for such loads is the safe choice, used within the recommended power window. In a surround system the QX-1 can be combined with the QX centre and surround models and the QX active subwoofer of the same series.

Alternatives

The larger bookshelf model in the range is the Mission QX-2, with a 165 mm bass driver, a 13.5 litre cabinet and a frequency response from 44 Hz.
