The QX-2 MKII is the larger standmount in the QX MKII series from Mission, the British loudspeaker brand within International Audio Group, and it sits above the QX-1 MKII. When the range launched in September 2021 its UK price was GBP 399 per pair. Mission describes the MKII update as a refinement of the existing QX platform, carried out through listening work led by acoustic director Peter Comeau and checked with laser interferometry, crossover simulation and computer optimisation tools.

Key specs that matter

A 165 mm long fibre composite mid/bass cone and a 38 mm textile ring dome tweeter share the band at 2.2 kHz in a vented enclosure of 13.5 litres. The rated response runs from 44 Hz to 24 kHz within 3 dB, reaching 38 Hz at -6 dB. Sensitivity is 88 dB measured with 2.0 V at 1 m, peak output is 95 dB, and the nominal load is 4 ohm, listed as compatible with 8 ohm amplifier outputs, falling to 3.6 ohm at its lowest. The cabinet is 320 mm tall on its plinth, 220 mm wide and 310 mm deep including terminals, and a single speaker weighs 8.5 kg. Buyers can choose a walnut, black oak or white matte cabinet, each fitted with an aluminium top plate in a matching colour.

Engineering and use context

The tweeter is placed under the woofer in the brand's Inverted Driver Geometry layout, which equalises the travel distance from both drivers to a seated listener and improves their time alignment. Mission's DiaDrive cone is formed as one curvilinear diaphragm with no seam and no dust cap, and acrylic fibres in the composite add stiffness while keeping the cone durable. The treble unit uses a woven textile dome in a double ring arrangement, fixed at its centre and driven by a voice coil attached part way down, with a phase plug in front and a twin rear cavity behind that avoids reflections. Mission says this gives better controlled behaviour between 10 kHz and 20 kHz than a standard dome. Serrated surrounds on the drivers were shaped after air-flow analysis, the slot port has serrated flares to smooth airflow, and aluminium plates at the top and bottom stiffen the box.

Pairing

The recommended amplifier range is 25 to 120 W. Because the impedance dips low, solid-state electronics that are stable into difficult loads make the logical partner, and the heavy, deep cabinet calls for sturdy stands of adequate top plate size.

Alternatives

The QX-1 MKII is the smaller standmount in the same line, with a 135 mm woofer and an 8.1 litre enclosure.
