The Mission ZX-2 is the bigger standmount of the ZX Series, a range of eight speakers that the British brand launched in November 2019. The series comprised the ZX-1 and ZX-2 standmounts, three floorstanders in the ZX-3, ZX-4 and ZX-5, two centre channels and one surround model, later joined by the ZX-12 subwoofer. At launch the ZX-2 was priced at GBP 749 per pair, and it is also listed by Mission for surround duty in a multichannel system.

Key specs that matter

A two-way bass reflex layout carries three drivers - a pair of 130 mm DiaDrive bass and midrange units with aluminium matrix diaphragms and a 38 mm Ring Dome treble unit. The crossover point sits at 2.4 kHz. Mission rates the response at 45 Hz to 24 kHz within 3 dB, with bass extension to 40 Hz at the 6 dB point. Sensitivity is 89 dB at 2.0 V and 1 m, nominal impedance is 8 ohm with a minimum of 3.8 ohm. Each cabinet is 420 mm tall, 240 mm wide and 350 mm deep plus 12 mm for the terminals, and weighs 9.4 kg. The ZX-2 is offered in gloss black lacquer or gloss white lacquer. Mission does not fit AV shielding to this model.

Engineering and use context

The drivers form a D'Appolito array, with the treble unit placed between the two DiaDrive units, one above and one below it. Mission's Ring Dome design fixes the dome at its centre and the voice coil is attached part of the way across, so the textile dome is formed into two rings driven from between them - Mission states this lowers distortion and extends output to 30 kHz and beyond. The DiaDrive units drop the usual cone and dust cap in favour of a single curvilinear diaphragm, which is driven by a secondary sub-cone connected to the voice coil. That sub-cone is vented to reduce resonance. The curved cabinet has internal bracing, and slot-shaped reflex ports exit at the rear.

Pairing

Mission recommends amplifiers rated from 25 to 150 W. As the load falls well under its nominal rating, an amplifier specified to drive 4 ohm loads is the safer match. Mission rates peak output at 110 dB. For multichannel use Mission lists the ZX-C1 and ZX-C2 centre models, the ZX-S surround and the ZX-12 subwoofer as partners from the same series, and the series also contains three floorstanding models for the front channels.

Alternatives

Within the ZX line the Mission ZX-1 offers a more compact standmount option with one DiaDrive unit of the same size above the Ring Dome tweeter, 88 dB sensitivity and a 300 mm tall cabinet.
