The XPA-5 Gen3 is a five-channel power amplifier from Emotiva, the Nashville-based company that sells its electronics directly and builds its XPA family around a modular architecture. The Gen3 chassis houses five High-Powered Single Channel Modules, and two further module slots stay free, so the same box can later be expanded to seven channels. It is aimed at the five main channels of a 5.1 layout or the bed channels of a 5.1.2, 5.1.4 or 5.1.6 Dolby Atmos and DTS:X system.
Key specs that matter
Rated output is 300 W RMS per channel into 8 ohms and 550 W into 4 ohms with one channel driven, 490 W into 4 ohms with two channels driven, and 250 W per channel into 8 ohms with all five channels driven, all across 20 Hz to 20 kHz. Broadband response runs from 5 Hz to 80 kHz (+0/-2 dB). THD+N is below 0.005% at 100 W into 8 ohms, signal-to-noise exceeds 117 dB referenced to rated power, and the damping factor is above 500. Voltage gain is 29 dB with input sensitivity of 1.71 V. Input impedance is 33 kohm balanced and 23.5 kohm single-ended. The chassis measures 432 x 203 x 483 mm and weighs 20.9 kg, and maximum power draw is 2000 W.
Engineering and use context
Each module is a fully discrete, dual differential, short-signal-path Class A/B circuit, so the output stage is linear rather than switching. Power comes from a high-efficiency switch-mode supply with Emotiva's Optimized Class H topology, which raises the rail voltage only when the signal demands it and keeps heat down with several channels running at once. The supply can deliver up to 3000 W to the amplifier stages. Microprocessor-controlled protection watches for shorts, overheating and DC faults, and a resettable push-button breaker on the rear panel handles AC line faults. Every channel offers both RCA and XLR inputs, independently selectable, and Emotiva covers the unit with a five-year warranty. Because modules are physically separate, a channel can be added by an authorised technician rather than replacing the amplifier.
Pairing
Its sensitivity and gain suit the pre-outs of any current AV processor or receiver, balanced or single-ended. Because the rating holds with all five channels driven, full-range towers and a centre speaker can share the amplifier. A common approach is to power the front left and right channels from a stereo XPA-DR2 and let the XPA-5 handle centre and surrounds, while height channels stay on the receiver or a second amplifier.
Alternatives
Emotiva's XPA-7 Gen3 fills all seven module slots in the same chassis for larger surround layouts.
