Emotiva's XPA-4 Gen3 is a four-channel model built on the XPA Gen3 modular platform. The company positions it for surround, height and ceiling speakers, so an AV receiver can pass its effects channels in a Dolby Atmos or DTS:X layout to a separate amplifier. More channels can be added as a system grows.

Key specs that matter

Four High-Powered Single Channel Modules are fitted. Into 8 ohm, each produces 260 W RMS with all four channels driven, and 415 W into 4 ohm under the same condition, both below 0.1% THD. Driving only two channels, output is 300 W into 8 ohm and 490 W into 4 ohm, while a single channel reaches 300 W into 8 ohm and 550 W into 4 ohm over the full audio band. Distortion plus noise stays under 0.005% at 100 W and 1 kHz, and broadband response is 5 Hz to 80 kHz (+0/-2 dB). Signal to noise exceeds 117 dB against rated power or 91 dB against 1 W, and damping factor into 8 ohm is over 500. Input sensitivity is 1.71 V with 29 dB of gain.

Engineering and use context

Output devices run in Class A/B, each module being fully discrete, dual differential and built for high current. According to Emotiva the regulated switch-mode supply is rated over 3 kW so it stays stable when several channels demand power at once, and Soft-Switch Optimized Class H operation raises efficiency. Rated maximum consumption is 1,700 W with test tones on every channel. The heavy steel 4RU enclosure has a milled aluminium front and measures about 432 x 203 x 483 mm with feet, and the net weight is about 19.1 kg, or 21.8 kg boxed. Modules can be installed by Emotiva, free with the purchase of new modules, or by an authorised service centre. A microprocessor handles fault protection, and a resettable breaker at the back guards the mains side. Line voltage is detected automatically from 100 to 250 VAC.

Pairing

Emotiva suggests connecting it to an AV processor, a preamp or a receiver with preamp outputs. Input impedance is 33 kOhm balanced and 23.5 kOhm unbalanced, with XLR and RCA per channel chosen by metal toggle switches, and speaker cables land on gold-plated five-way posts. The trigger input accepts 5 to 12 V and the output supplies 12 VDC. Minimum recommended load is 4 ohm per channel, which may be one 4 ohm speaker or two 8 ohm speakers in parallel. Power bandwidth at rated output is 20 Hz to 20 kHz within 0.1 dB, and a standard IEC inlet accepts ordinary mains cables. Blue status LEDs, one per channel, turn red when a fault occurs.
