The BasX A11 is an eleven-channel power amplifier from Emotiva's BasX line, the American company's more affordable range. It is designed to supply all the amplification for a large Atmos home cinema from one chassis, typically paired with a surround processor such as Emotiva's own MC1, or to upgrade the power available from an existing AV receiver's pre-outs.
Key specs that matter
With all eleven channels driven, the A11 delivers 105W RMS per channel into 8 ohms (20Hz to 20kHz, THD below 0.1%) and 140W per channel into 4 ohms (1kHz, THD below 1%). With fewer channels working, output per channel rises - 125W into 8 ohms with seven channels driven, 145W with five, and 160W into 8 ohms or 260W into 4 ohms with two. Power bandwidth is 20Hz to 20kHz within +/-0.07dB at rated power, and A-weighted signal-to-noise ratio is 115dB. Inputs are gold-plated RCA, and five-way binding posts accept banana plugs, spades or bare wire. The chassis measures 432 x 197 x 394mm and weighs about 23kg. Emotiva gives a three-year warranty.
Engineering and use context
The A11 uses a heavy-duty linear power supply built around a large toroidal transformer with generous filtering, feeding eleven Class A/B output stages with short, high-current signal paths. The supply is arranged in a Class H configuration, providing extra rail voltage only during demanding peaks and reducing heat the rest of the time, which is what allows eleven channels to share one chassis. Because all channels draw from the same supply, available power per channel depends on how many are working hard at once, which is why Emotiva publishes figures for two, five, seven and eleven channels driven. Microprocessor-controlled monitoring protects against short circuits and ground faults without adding circuitry to the signal path during normal operation, and each channel has a status LED that turns from blue to red if a fault occurs. The amplifier detects 115V or 230V mains automatically. A milled aluminium faceplate finishes the steel case.
Pairing
The eleven channels cover a complete 7.1.4 Dolby Atmos layout driven by a surround processor, or a 7.1 system with the three front speakers bi-amped. Trigger input and output switch the A11 on and off with the processor. The unbalanced inputs match the pre-outs found on most AV receivers and processors, and the low-impedance rating covers typical home cinema speaker loads.
Alternatives
Emotiva's own BasX A-700 offers seven channels in the same line for smaller surround layouts.
