The Emotiva XPA-6 Gen3 is a six-channel power amplifier aimed at home cinema systems, designed and built in-house in the USA and sold at an MSRP of USD 2,499. Its chassis is modular and holds spare slots, so the configuration can grow later, with modules installed by Emotiva or an authorised service representative. The case is black steel.
Key specs that matter
With all six channels driven, each delivers 225 W RMS into 8 ohm or 350 W RMS into 4 ohm at under 0.1% THD. A single channel reaches 300 W into 8 ohm and 550 W into 4 ohm, the latter at under 0.2% THD. Frequency response is 5 Hz to 80 kHz, plus 0 and minus 2 dB. THD plus noise stays below 0.005% at 100 W into 8 ohm at 1 kHz, and signal to noise exceeds 117 dB referenced to rated power, A-weighted, through the unbalanced input. Gain is 29 dB, and an input of 1.71 V is enough to reach rated power. Damping factor is above 500 into 8 ohm.
Engineering and use context
Every channel is a fully discrete class A/B module. They are fed by a regulated high-current switch-mode power supply working with a soft-switch optimised class H scheme, which raises the supply rails only when the signal needs them. Every channel offers balanced and unbalanced sockets, chosen by its own metal toggle, with input impedance of 33 kOhm balanced and 23.5 kOhm unbalanced. The supply accepts any line voltage from 100 to 250 V AC at 50 or 60 Hz, and peak consumption can reach 1,900 W. The five-way binding posts are gold-plated, fitted with clear shields that accept bananas, spades or stripped cable. A 12 V trigger input accepts 5 to 12 V AC or DC, and a 12 V DC trigger output can drive loads up to 120 mA. On the front, the halo ring around the standby button changes colour, and each channel has a blue status LED that turns red on a fault. The rear carries the AC rocker switch, a switch to disable the LEDs and a resettable circuit breaker. A microprocessor protects against excessive temperature, shorted speaker leads and ground faults. The case measures 432 x 203 x 483 mm and weighs 20.9 kg unboxed, with Emotiva's warranty lasting five years from purchase.
Pairing
The XPA-6 Gen3 is meant to follow an AV processor or receiver with preamp outputs, powering front, centre and surround speakers in a 5.1 or 6-channel layout, and the balanced inputs suit processors with XLR outputs.
Alternatives
The Emotiva XPA-9 Gen3 is the nine-channel member of the same Gen3 amplifier family.
