Esoteric N-01XE – Grandioso Flagship Technologies in a New Network DAC

Japan’s Esoteric has launched the N-01XE, a network player with the functionality of an external digital-to-analog converter, developed using technologies derived from the company’s flagship Grandioso series. The new model builds on the concepts introduced with the Esoteric N-01XD SE but features substantially redesigned digital and network sections. At its core are Esoteric’s proprietary Master Sound Discrete DAC G2 and Network Engine G4, both conceptually inherited from the flagship Grandioso N1. Esoteric has deliberately avoided off-the-shelf DAC chips from third-party manufacturers, implementing digital-to-analog conversion instead with an FPGA and carefully selected discrete components.

The Master Sound Discrete DAC G2 uses a fully separated architecture for the left and right channels. Each channel incorporates 32 discrete elements, while the clock circuitry, logic, resistors, and capacitors operate independently. The DAC supports DSD streams up to 22.5 MHz and PCM up to 768 kHz, with different processing algorithms used for the two formats. The analog stages employ precision MELF resistors and Esoteric’s proprietary IDM-01 amplifier modules. Particular attention has also been paid to clocking: the built-in Master Sound Discrete Clock was developed using technologies derived from the OCXO system employed in the Grandioso G1X external master clock generator and is designed to reduce jitter.

The power supply architecture of the Esoteric N-01XE is equally elaborate. Five independent transformers are installed inside the chassis, supplying the left and right DAC channels, the network section, digital circuitry, and control system separately. Key circuits use discrete DC regulators with minimal feedback as well as dedicated linear power supplies. All electronics are housed in a two-layer aluminum-and-steel chassis with a 5 mm-thick steel base plate. The unit rests on three proprietary Pinpoint feet, which are not rigidly screwed to the chassis but are held in place by the weight of the component itself, an arrangement intended to reduce mechanical stress and vibration.

Network playback is handled by the fourth-generation Esoteric Network Engine G4, featuring a more powerful processor, increased memory capacity, and its own linear power supply. Network connectivity includes Ethernet RJ45 and SFP ports, with the optical interface allowing galvanic isolation of the audio system from network equipment. Both ports can be used simultaneously, while the N-01XE can also operate as a network switch. Digital inputs include AES/EBU, coaxial, optical, and asynchronous USB-B, with the latter supporting PCM streams up to 32-bit/384 kHz and DSD up to 22.5 MHz. All digital inputs are galvanically isolated, while several digital filter options and PCM-to-DSD conversion are also provided. Pricing and the launch date for the Esoteric N-01XE have not yet been announced.
