The SL-100C is a complete direct-drive turntable system from Technics, the Panasonic-owned brand, aimed at a wider group of listeners than strictly dedicated enthusiasts. It arrives with an Audio-Technica AT-VM95C moving-magnet cartridge already mounted, and its motor draws on development work for the SL-1200 series and the SL-1000R. US list price is USD 1,399.99.
Key specs that matter
Speed options are 33 1/3, 45 and 78 rpm. Wow and flutter is 0.025% W.R.M.S., starting torque is 0.18 N m and the platter reaches 33 1/3 rpm from standstill in 0.7 seconds. The aluminium die-cast platter is 332 mm across and weighs about 2.0 kg with its sheet. The universal static balance tonearm has a 230 mm effective length, a 15 mm overhang and a 22 degree offset angle, with tracking error held within 2 degrees 32 minutes at the outer groove of a 30 cm record and within 0 degrees 32 minutes at the inner groove. Stylus pressure is set from 0 to 4 g by direct reading, and the headshell weighs about 7.6 g. Applicable cartridge weight is 5.6 to 12.0 g, or 14.3 to 20.7 g including the headshell. The deck measures 453 x 169 x 372 mm, weighs about 9.9 kg and draws 8 W, or 0.2 W in standby.
Engineering and use context
Technics uses a coreless, brushless DC direct-drive motor here, and the absence of an iron core removes cogging, the uneven rotation that a cored motor can produce. Technics states that it needs no replacement parts over its life. The S-shaped aluminium arm uses a gimbal suspension of the kind used on the SL-1200 series, and arm height adjusts over 6 mm, so owners can fit other cartridges later. The cabinet combines an aluminium die-cast chassis with a layer of ABS mixed with glass fibre, and it rests on spring-and-rubber insulators that limit outside vibration. An auto lifter raises the arm at the end of a side without drawing on motor power, which saves stylus and record wear if the listener is away. The headshell uses a 1.2 mm 4-pin terminal lug.
Pairing
With no phono equaliser inside, the SL-100C has to feed a moving-magnet phono stage, either inside the amplifier or as a separate box, connected through one pair of RCA pin jacks and an earth terminal. The supplied accessories include a dust cover, an EP record adaptor, a balance weight, a phono cable and a phono earth lead.
Alternatives
The Technics SL-1300G is a Grand Class direct-drive turntable with a brass and aluminium platter and a twin-rotor coreless motor, supplied without a cartridge.
