The Rolling Stones Recordplayer is a limited-edition record player made by Pro-Ject Audio Systems as a special collaboration with The Rolling Stones for its Artist Collection, decorated with the band's lips logo, which lead singer Mick Jagger first commissioned in 1970. It is based on the design of the Pro-Ject Debut III and was offered in two high-gloss finishes, black or white, with a UK launch price of GBP 329.
Key specs that matter
The two speeds, 33 and 45 rpm, are changed by hand. A 300 mm steel platter with a felt mat turns on a stainless steel bearing. Wow and flutter is rated at 0.12 percent either way, speed drift at 0.80 percent, and signal-to-noise of 65 dB. The tonearm, made of aluminium and 8.6 inches long, offers a 218.5 mm effective length, a 9.5 g effective mass and 18.5 mm of overhang, with tracking force adjustable between 10 and 30 mN. An Ortofon OM10 moving-magnet cartridge comes pre-mounted. The deck measures 415 x 118 x 320 mm (WxHxD) and weighs 5.5 kg net.
Engineering and use context
The chassis is made of MDF, which Pro-Ject chose for its low sensitivity to resonance, and the plinth is thick. It rests on special decoupling feet, and Pro-Ject describes the synchronous motor as a high-grade unit. A silicone belt carries drive from the synchronous motor, and the motor control is intended to reduce motor vibration and keep speed stable. A stainless steel spindle sits in a low-tolerance bearing. Power comes from an external 15 V DC, 1.6 A supply, and consumption stays below 2 W. A dust cover is included, along with a Connect it E cable fitted with gold-plated RCA plugs, so the deck can be connected straight out of the box. Pro-Ject gave it the technical layout of the Debut III, while the lips artwork is the distinguishing feature. The model is discontinued.
Pairing
There is no phono stage built in, so the Connect it E cable has to be plugged into an MM-capable phono input or into a standalone phono preamplifier. The pre-fitted OM10 is a moving-magnet type, so a standard MM input is all that is required, and the arm's tracking force range leaves room for other MM cartridges later.
Alternatives
The Pro-Ject T1 EVO is a turntable with a heavy 8 mm glass platter, a CNC-machined wooden plinth and a pre-fitted Ortofon OM10.
