The 2Xperience The Beatles White Album is a limited edition record player built by Pro-Ject Audio Systems together with Universal Music Group and the band for the 50th anniversary of the White Album, originally released in 1968 as the first Beatles studio album after the success of Sergeant Pepper. It is the fifth limited edition turntable of the cooperation and completes the brand's Artist Collection line-up. Only 500 pieces were made worldwide, timed with the album's re-release at the end of 2018, and the model is now sold out.
Key specs that matter
Speed change between 33 and 45 rpm is electronic. Wow and flutter is 0.12% at 33 and 0.11% at 45, speed variance is 0.12% at 33 and 0.28% at 45, and signal-to-noise reaches 70 dB. The 300 mm platter is acrylic and runs on a stainless steel bearing. The 9-inch EVO arm is aluminium, with a 230 mm effective length, an 8.5 g effective mass, an 18 mm overhang and a tracking force range of 10 to 30 mN. A 15 V DC, 800 mA supply is included, and consumption is 4 W at most with under 0.5 W on standby. Outer dimensions are 460 x 133 x 360 mm and net weight is 8 kg.
Engineering and use context
Its belt is driven by a motor with precision control. The player is a special version of the 2Xperience SB and is finished almost entirely in white, with the tonearm and cartridge in matching colour. The resonance-optimised MDF chassis is heavy, very rigid and coated in matt white. The main platter is acrylic, chosen by Pro-Ject both for its technical properties and for the look, and a white record clamp secures the LP on it to reduce unwanted resonances. The drive pulley is diamond cut, and the electronic control works as a Speed Box for speed stability. Tonearm bearings are inverted and of ABEC 7 quality. A dust cover ships with the deck.
Pairing
Ortofon produced the 2M White moving-magnet cartridge specifically for this turntable, and it arrives pre-mounted. The deck therefore needs an MM phono stage, either in the amplifier itself or in a dedicated box such as the Tube Box S2 phono preamplifier from Pro-Ject. The package contains the power supply and a dust cover. Pro-Ject says the re-released White Album was carefully remastered, and presents the player as a companion to that release for fans of the band.
Alternatives
The earlier Sergeant Pepper limited edition 2Xperience SB from Pro-Ject uses the same platform with an MDF sandwich platter, a carbon tonearm and a pre-fitted Ortofon 2M Silver.
