The Debut Reference 10 comes from Austrian manufacturer Pro-Ject Audio Systems, producing its turntables by hand in the EU since 1991, and uses belt drive. It pairs a long tonearm with an acrylic platter and is supplied with the Pick it PRO B cartridge, a revised design that allows the signal to be carried in true balanced form all the way to the phono stage. The Pick it PRO B is rated at 4 mV output at 1 kHz with an elliptical 8/18 um stylus, a 7.2 g body developed together with Ortofon, 20 to 20,000 Hz response within 2 dB and 22 dB channel separation at 1 kHz, and it tracks at 2.0 g with a recommended 47 kOhm and 150 to 300 pF load.

Key specs that matter

Its 10 inch arm, built as a single carbon-aluminium tube, has an effective length of 254 mm, an effective mass of 16.6 g and an overhang of 16 mm. Speeds of 33, 45 and 78 rpm are changed electronically with a single button. Published wow and flutter sits at plus or minus 0.16 percent for 33 and 0.14 percent for 45, speed drift at 0.4 and 0.5 percent, and signal to noise at 68 dB. The deck is 462 x 145 x 345 mm and weighs 6 kg net. Power comes from a 15 V DC, 0.8 A supply, and consumption is 4 W in use and 0 W in standby.

Engineering and use context

In place of the die-cast metal platters used on other Debut models, the Reference 10 has a 300 mm acrylic platter that Pro-Ject describes as resonance-free. Beneath it turns a diamond-cut aluminium sub-platter, and the main bearing pairs a precision-ground stainless axle with a bronze bushing. A DC/AC generator creates a completely clean new sine wave to drive the motor, keeping the rotation independent of mains quality. Grub screws on the arm base give full adjustment of vertical tracking angle and azimuth. The plinth rests on three damped aluminium feet with individually adjustable height. Outputs include both a True Balanced mini XLR socket and RCA phono sockets, and Pro-Ject packs its Connect it Phono E interconnect for the RCA route.

Pairing

The mini XLR output should be connected to a preamplifier offering a True Balanced input, where the balanced cartridge can be used to full effect. Via the RCA sockets the turntable also connects to a conventional moving magnet stage, whether inside an amplifier or outboard.

Alternatives

A related option from the same maker is its Debut PRO S Balanced, with an S-shape aluminium arm, SME headshell connector and a die-cast aluminium platter.
