The Ringo Starr Peace & Love turntable is a limited edition from Pro-Ject Audio Systems marking the 30th anniversary of Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band. The artwork on the plinth was designed by Ringo Starr himself around his message of love, togetherness and care. Underneath the decoration sits an Essential III that arrives with an acrylic platter already fitted instead of the stock one. Pro-Ject marks the edition as sold out.
Key specs that matter
It is a belt-drive deck with manual change between 33 and 45 rpm. Maximum speed deviation is 0.70% at 33 rpm and 0.60% at 45 rpm, plus wow and flutter of 0.21% and 0.19%. The 300 mm acrylic platter turns on a low-tolerance bearing with a stainless steel spindle. The 8.6-inch aluminium arm runs in sapphire bearings, with an effective length of 218.5 mm, an overhang of 22.0 mm and an effective mass of 8.0 g, and it takes cartridges weighing 3 to 5.5 g. An Ortofon OM10 comes pre-mounted, and the tracking force range runs from 0 to 25 mN with 15 mN advised for this cartridge. Maximum consumption is 4.5 W. The body takes up 420 mm in width and 330 mm in depth at a height of 112 mm, and it weighs 5.0 kg net.
Engineering and use context
A synchronous motor turns a diamond cut aluminium pulley, and a built-in motor control powered from DC keeps platter speed steady. The acrylic platter is see-through, so the printed artwork below remains visible, and Pro-Ject fits it to remove unwanted resonances in the rotating mass. The chassis is MDF. Because the cartridge is already mounted, the owner only needs to install the belt and platter, balance the arm and set the advised downforce before playing. Pro-Ject supplies a lid, a felt mat and the mains adapter along with a semi-balanced Connect it E phono cable with gold-plated RCA plugs, so no extra cabling has to be bought to connect it.
Pairing
The OM10 is a moving-magnet cartridge and requires a moving-magnet phono section in the amplifier or an outboard preamp feeding a line input. The supplied Connect it E cable runs from the tonearm output directly into that input. Within the arm's cartridge weight window, future upgrades within the Ortofon OM family or similar MM bodies fit the arm without modification. As the speed is changed by lifting the platter and moving the belt on the pulley, switching to 45 rpm takes a few seconds of handling, and the felt mat stays on the acrylic during play.
Alternatives
The standard Pro-Ject Essential III offers the same chassis, motor and sapphire-bearing arm without the limited artwork and without the acrylic platter as standard.
